A method of calculating leg length discrepancy of a patient including: receiving patient bone data associated with a lower body of the patient; identifying anatomical landmarks in the patient bone data; orienting a first proximal landmark and a second proximal landmark relative to each other and an origin in a coordinate system; aligning a first axis associated with a first femur and a second axis associated with a second femur with a longitudinal axis extending in a distal-proximal direction, wherein the first and second distal landmarks are adjusted according to the alignment of the first and second axes; calculating a distance between the first and second distal landmarks in the distal-proximal direction along the longitudinal axis; and displaying at least one of the distance or a portion of the patient bone data on a display screen.

An end effector for a computer-assisted surgical system includes a mount configured to be coupled to an arm and a housing coupled to the mount and configured to interchangeably support a first operating member and a second operating member. When the housing supports the first operating member, the housing is configured to prevent translation of the first operating member relative to the mount. When the housing supports the second operating member, the housing is configured to allow translation of the second operating member relative to the mount along a first axis.

A CAS system and method for guiding an operator in inserting a femoral implant in a femur as a function of a limb length and orientation of the femoral implant with respect to the femur, comprising a reference tool for the femur, a registration tool, a bone altering tool and a sensing apparatus. A controller is connected to the sensing apparatus to: i) register a frame of reference of the femur by calculating surface information provided by the registration tool as a function of the position and orientation of the registration tool provided by the sensing apparatus, and/or retrieving in a database a model of the femur; ii) calculate a desired implant position with respect to the frame of reference as a function of the limb length; and iii) calculate a current implant position and orientation in relation to the desired implant position with respect to alterations being performed in the femur with the bone altering tool, as a function of the position and orientation of the bone altering tool provided by the sensing apparatus and of a digital model of a femoral implant provided by the database. The database is connected to the controller for the controller to store and retrieve information relating to an operation of the controller. The computer-assisted system may be used to guide an operator in inserting a pelvic implant in an acetabulum as a function of an orientation of the pelvic implant with respect to the pelvis.

Computer-assisted hip replacement surgery

A memory device stores instructions, which, when executed by a controller, cause the controller to perform tasks. The tasks include obtaining a three-dimensional (3D) model of a patient's pelvis, identifying two landmarks of the 3D model of the patient's pelvis, defining a coronal radiographic plane of the patient, and determining a mediolateral axis of the 3D axis based on the two landmarks. The tasks also include planning the surgical placement of the acetabular cup into the acetabulum by positioning a virtual model of the acetabular cup relative to the 3D model and determining a planned version and a planned inclination based on the virtual model of the acetabular cup, the mediolateral axis and the coronal radiographic plane.

A method for computer-assisted orthopedic feedback of at least one surgical tool relative a pre-operative plan, wherein the surgical tool is moveable relative to an anatomy of a patient during surgery, including providing the pre-operative plan including a planned position and orientation of an implant relative to a virtual model of the anatomy. Further including obtaining a position of the patient structure and at least one surgical tool using a navigation system, and registering the anatomy to the model of the anatomy. A system and method for determining inclination and version of a prosthetic acetabular cup relative to a coronal radiographic plane is provided. The system and method include the identification of a coronal radiographic plane in a three dimensional medical image. The system and method further include the identification of two symmetric landmarks on the pelvis to determine a mediolateral axis. The version and inclination can then be calculated based on the relationship between the axis of the acetabular cup, the coronal radiographic plan, and the mediolateral axis.

A surgical system for positioning a prosthetic component includes a robotic arm and a surgical tool having an end effector configured to be coupled to the robotic arm. The system further includes a controller programmed to generate control signals, based on a planned pose of the prosthetic component, that cause the robotic arm to allow movement of the surgical tool in at least one degree of freedom and to constrain movement of the surgical tool in other degrees of freedom, wherein the controller is programmed to generate control signals that cause the robotic arm to maintain the constraint as the prosthetic component is implanted on the anatomy.

A surgical system for positioning a prosthetic component includes a surgical tool and a force system configured to provide a force to the surgical tool. The system further includes a controller programmed to: compare an actual pose of a prosthetic component engaged by the surgical tool and a target pose of the prosthetic component, and generate control signals that cause the force system to allow movement of the surgical tool within a range of movement and to provide a force to constrain movement of the surgical tool beyond the range of movement. The force resists movement of the surgical tool that would cause substantial deviation between an aspect of the actual pose of the prosthetic component and a corresponding aspect of the target pose. The controller is programmed to generate control signals that cause the force system to maintain the force as the prosthetic component is implanted on the anatomy.

A surgical system includes a surgical tool configured to be coupled to a cutting element, a force system configured to provide at least some force to the surgical tool, and a controller programmed to generate control signals. The control signals cause the force system to provide a first constraint on a user's manual movement of the surgical tool when the cutting element is a first cutting element and provide a second constraint, different from the first constraint, on a user's manual movement of the surgical tool when the cutting element is a second cutting element.

A system for calculating a position and orientation of an acetabular cup in computer-assisted surgery comprises a first trackable reference secured to a pelvis, with a frame of reference being associated with the first trackable reference. A device is positionable between a femoral neck and the acetabulum of the pelvis in a known relation, the device having a second trackable reference. Sensors track the trackable references for position and orientation. A position/orientation calculator calculates a position and orientation of the frame of reference and of the device and for determining an orientation of the neck axis with respect to the frame of reference from the known relation at a desired position of the femur. An implant position/orientation calculator provides cup implanting information with respect to the orientation of said neck axis as a function of the tracking for position and orientation of at least the first trackable reference.
