An interpolymer composition comprising monomer-derived units of (i) at least one of an aliphatic olefin containing from 2 to 30 carbon atoms and a vinyl aromatic monomer, and (ii) at least one alpha, beta-unsaturated acylating agent; wherein a portion of said acylating agent monomers is esterified and wherein a portion of said acylating agent monomers is condensed with at least one aromatic amine, provides good viscosity modification and dispersancy performance.

Dispersant viscosity modifiers based on maleic anhydride-styrene copolymers

Hydrocarbyl substituted carboxylic compositions and derivatives thereof useful as dispersant/viscosity improvers for lubricating oil and fuel compositions. Carboxylic compositions are derived from (A) a hydrocarbon polymer having M ranging from about 20,000 to about 500,000, and (B) an &agr;,&bgr;-unsaturated carboxylic compound prepared by reacting (1) an active methylene compound of the formula (I), and (2) a carbonyl compound of the general formula (II), wherein R is H or hydrocarbyl and R is a member of the group consisting of H, hydrocarbyl and (III), wherein each R&prime; is independently R or OR and each R is, independently, H or a hydrocarbyl group; and lower alkyl acetals, ketals, hemiacetals and hemiketals of the carbonyl compound (2). Carboxylic derivative compositions are obtained by reacting the carboxylic compositions with a reactant selected from the group consisting of (a) amines characterized by the presence within their structure of at least one condensable H&mdash;N< group, (b) alcohols, (c) reactive metal or reactive metal compounds, and (d) a combination of two or more of any of (a) through (c), the components of (d) being reacted with the carboxylic composition simultaneously or sequentially, in any order.

Dispersant-viscosity improvers for lubricating oil and fuels

A nitrogen-containing ester derived from a carboxy-containing interpolymer having a reduced specific viscosity (RSV) of from about 0.05 to about 2, said interpolymer being derived from at least two monomers, (i) one of said monomers being at least one of an aliphatic olefin containing from 2 to about 30 carbon atoms and a vinyl aromatic monomer and (ii) the other of said monomers being at least one alpha, beta-unsaturated acylating agent, said ester being characterized by the presence within its polymeric structure of each of the following groups which are derived from the carboxy groups of said interpolymer: (A) from about 20 to about 70 mole % based on moles of carboxyl groups in said interpolymer, of ester groups containing from about 13 to about 19 carbon atoms; (B) from about 80 to about 30 mole %, based on moles of carboxyl groups in said interpolymer, of ester groups containing from about 8 to about 12 carbon atoms, optionally; (C) up to about 20 mole %, based on moles of carboxyl groups in said interpolymer, of ester groups containing from 2 to 7 carbon atoms; wherein from about 93 to about 97% of the carboxy groups derived from the carboxy-containing interpolymer are ester groups, the balance of the carboxy groups comprising residual carboxylic acid or anhydride groups which are then (D) reacted with at least one amino compound having an average of from 1 to about 1.1 primary or secondary amino groups, to convert from about 5 up to less than 50% of the carboxylic acid or anhydride groups to carbonyl-amino groups, with the unreacted carboxylic acid or anhydride groups remaining as (E) residual carboxylic acid or anhydride groups. A composition comprising a hydrocarbon polymer having {overscore (M)},ranging from 20,000 to about 500,000, when the polymer is not a star polymer, and up to about GPC peak molecular weight of 4,000,000 when the polymer is a star polymer having attached thereto pendant groups A,and B,wherein each A is independently a member of the group of formula &mdash;Q&mdash;K,wherein each Q is independently an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon group, each K is independently a member selected from the group consisting of amide groups, nitrile groups, ester groups and carboxylic acid groups, and each k is independently a number ranging from 1 to about 3, and when k&gE;2, groups &mdash;K on adjacent carbon atoms, taken together, may constitute a succinimide group, and a is 0 or a number ranging from 1 to about 50; and each B is independently a member of the group of formula:

Two-stroke cycle engines can be effectively lubricated by supplying to the engine a mixture of an oil of lubricating viscosity and a hydrocarbyl-substituted hydroxyaromatic carboxylic acid or an ester, unsubstituted amide, hydrocarbyl-substituted amide, ammonium salt, hydrocarbylamine salt, or monovalent metal salt thereof in an amount suitable to reduce piston deposits in said engine. The mixture supplied to the engine contains less than 0.06 percent by weight of divalent metals.

Salicylate salts as lubricant additives for two-cycle engines

A diesel lubricant exhibiting improved ability to minimize undesirable viscosity increases when used in diesel engines is described. More particularly, in accordance with the present invention, a diesel lubricant is described which comprises a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity and a minor amount, sufficient to minimize undesirable viscosity increases of the lubricant when used in diesel engines, of a composition comprising (A) at least one carboxylic derivative composition produced by reacting at least one substituted succinic acylating agent with at least one amino compound containing at least one --NH-- group wherein said acylating agent consists of substituent groups and succinic groups wherein the substituent groups are derived from polyalkene characterized by an Mn value of at least about 1200 and an Mw/Mn ratio of at least about 1.5, and wherein said acylating agents are characterized by the presence within their structure of an average of at least about 1.3 succinic groups for each equivalent weight of substituent groups, and (B) at least one basic alkali or alkaline earth metal salt of at least one acidic organic compound having a metal ratio of at least about 2. The composition should have a TBN in the range of about 6 to about 15, with the sucinnic acid derivative contributing about 0.5 to 1.5 TBN to the composition. The alkali or alkaline earth metal salts (detergents) should contribute the rest of the TBN of the composition. TBN is measured by the ASTM D2896 method. Magnesium should contribute less than about 30% of the total TBN of the composition. The invention also includes methods for operating diesel engines which comprises lubricating said engines during operation with the diesel lubricants of the invention.
