Rotor assembly apparatus are disclosed. An example rotor assembly includes a twist actuator to drive a first rotation of a first shaft about a first axis, the twist actuator positioned at a center of rotation of the rotor assembly. A first gear assembly to convert the first rotation into a plurality of second rotations of a plurality of second shafts. Each of the second shafts to provide torque to a respective blade coupled to the rotor assembly.

Rotor assembly apparatus

Rotor assembly apparatus are disclosed. An example rotor assembly includes a twist actuator to drive a first rotation of a first shaft about a first axis, the twist actuator positioned at a center of rotation of the rotor assembly; and a first gear assembly to convert the first rotation into a plurality of second rotations of a plurality of second shafts, each of the second shafts to provide torque to a respective blade coupled to the rotor assembly.

A disc rotor blade retraction system includes a main blade spar incorporating a hydraulic cylinder and having a screw thread. A ball screw is concentrically carried within the main blade spar and is operably connected to a ball nut which has an outboard end connected to an intermediate spar with a hydraulic piston received for reciprocation in the hydraulic cylinder. A first geared actuator engages the ball screw and a second geared actuator engages the main blade spar screw thread. A hydraulic fluid accumulator providing pressurized hydraulic fluid is connected to an outboard end of the hydraulic cylinder and a controller actuates the first and second geared actuators.

Disc rotor retraction system

A stiff in-plane gimbaled rotor head for a rotorcraft, such as a helicopter, includes a vertically extending rotor shaft, a center hub disposed on the rotor shaft for conjoint rotation therewith, and an outer hub surrounding the center hub and coupled thereto through a spherical gimbal bearing for conjoint rotation therewith, and such that the outer hub is also capable of an angular range of gimbaling movement relative to the center hub. A plurality of rotor blades, which may include three or more blades, is coupled to the rotor shaft through the inner and outer hubs by a constant velocity joint that enables the blades to be rotated in a common plane about the axis of the rotor shaft while controlling the respective pitches of the blades and such that any other relative in-plane and out-of-plane movements of the blades during rotation is prevented.

A protective boot for a helicopter blade pitch link assembly as described herein includes a split joint that allows for easy removal and replacement of the protective boot. The protective boot is less expensive to replace, requires less manpower, and eliminates the need for post-maintenance test flights, which might otherwise be necessary to confirm proper alignment and installation of the pitch link assemblies.

A helicopter pitch link assembly as described herein includes a length adjustment mechanism, such as a turnbuckle, that is accessible when the pitch link assembly is installed on a helicopter that utilizes a weather cover or canopy and a protective boot. The adjustment mechanism extends above the canopy and the protective boot, even when the rotor blades are in a neutral pitch position. This enables quick and easy access to the adjustment mechanisms while eliminating the need to support the rotor blades, which might otherwise be necessary to alleviate stress on the rotor blade hinge points and pitch link assembly.
