A pump or compressor for transporting a fluid comprises an impeller includes a plurality of impeller elements disposed for rotation to impart kinetic energy to the fluid. The impeller, which in one embodiment is an axial flow compressor, has an electrically conductive ring or other conductive members disposed along a rotary path of the impeller. An impeller driver includes a ring of magnetically permeable material extending in an arc proximate to the rotary path of the conductive portion of the impeller. The impeller driver acts as a motor stator with two core portions wound with electrically conductive coils for inducing a magnetic field in the ring and two electrically conductive pole portions spaced from the core portions. Alternating electrical current introduced to the coils imparts a rotary force to the electrically conductive ring of the impeller, causing it to transport the compressor working fluid.

An axial flow hair dryer comprises a generally circular main housing with a transitional portion that smoothly reduces the housing diameter to an outlet. A first fan stage in the main housing generates an axial air flow through the housing. An outer duct has two axial extensions secured to the housing near the beginning of the transitional portion, and the housing air outlet introduces air exiting the housing into the outer duct. The housing and the outer duct form two additional ambient air intakes extending between the axial extensions in a smooth arc toward the main housing outlet. A second fan stage includes a second axial flow impeller in the outer duct for generating air flow through the ambient air intake. The second axial flow impeller includes inner and outer blades separated by an annular shroud that forms an extension of the main housing flow passage. A guide duct in the outer duct forms a further extension of the extended air flow passage, and the guide duct includes stator vanes at its outlet. A handle depending from the main housing holds a motor and a flex shaft connects the motor to a drive shaft that carries both fan stages. Resistance heating wires in the main housing heat the air flowing through the hair dryer.

The boundary layer of a fluid travelling in a mean-flow direction relative to a surface of a wall of a body is controlled by generating in the fluid a magnetic field B having flux lines along the surface of the wall and an electric current density J traversing the magnetic flux lines in the fluid to form a control region. The magnetic field B and the electric current density J create in the control region a force J.times.B that introduces a vorticity distribution .omega. (x,y,z,t) into the flow. A plurality of such control regions is arranged in an two-dimensional array of control tiles that are actuated such that over the array the vorticity at the wall in the direction transverse to the free-stream direction is reduced and creation of the boundary layer vorticity concentrations in the free-stream direction is inhibited.

An axial flow hair dryer comprises a main housing and an outer duct secured to the main housing with the axis of the outer duct coincident with the axis of the main housing and with the axial air outlet of the main housing disposed within the outer duct to form an annular air intake between the main housing and the outer duct. A first fan stage and first stator stage are disposed within the main housing and a second fan stage and second stator stage are disposed within the outer duct. A handle depending from the main housing holds a motor that is mounted using vibration-absorbing material to inhibit the propagation of noise generated by the motor. A flexible shaft connects the motor to a drive shaft that carries both fan stages. Resistance heating wires are wrapped around the vanes of the first stator stage to heat the air flowing through the hair dryer.

A lifting body moves relative to a fluid, thereby creating a vortex field in the fluid downstream of the lifting body. The lifting body has a predetermined lift distribution along the length thereof which enhances the velocity component of the fluid flow directed outwardly from the centroid of the vortex field to reduce the strength of trailing vortices. In a preferred embodiment, the lifting body is a wing with a perturbation proximate to the tip end of the wing planform trailing edge.

A method is described for compiling a source code listing into an object code listing and comprises the steps of: extracting a block of source code statements from a source code listings; mapping each source code statement in the block into a wide intermediate code (WIC) statement in object form, a WIC statement defining a series of machine actions to perform the function(s) called for by the source code statement; performing an initial approximate simulation of each WIC statement in a block and deriving performance results from the simulation of each WIC statement and the block of WIC statements; dependent upon the performance results, revising the WIC statements in the block in accordance with one of a group of code transform algorithms and heuristics in an attempt to improve the code's performance results; and repeating the approximate simulation to determine if the performance results have been improved and, if so, proceeding to another of the algorithms to enable further revision of the WIC statements, until a decision point is reached, and at such time, producing the revised WIC statements in object code form.

The magnetic field B and the electric current density J create in the control region a force J.times.B that can stabilize or destabilize flow in the boundary layer. A plurality of such control regions can be arranged in an two-dimensional array of control tiles that are periodically actuated in a controlled, predetermined pattern at a critical frequency that provides boundary layer control over a given area.

The boundary layer of a fluid travelling in a mean-flow direction relative to a surface of a wall of a body is controlled by generating in a near-wall region of the flow a magnetic field B having flux lines parallel to the surface of the wall and an electric current density J traversing the magnetic flux lines in the fluid. An electrolyte or other conductivity-enhancing material is introduced into the flow to provide an electrical conductivity gradient in the near-wall region. The magnetic field B and the electric current density J create in the fluid a force J.times.B having a component normal to the surface of the wall that because of the increased conductivity gradient near the surface can stabilize or destabilize flow in the boundary layer. Numerous aspects of the fluid flow and its interaction with the body can thus be controlled. As examples, shear stress in the fluid at the wall can be decreased, with a corresponding reduction in viscous drag, the characteristics of the acoustic and pressure fields in the fluid surrounding the body can be controlled to reduce noise and fatigue, and boundary layer separation can be inhibited or induced.

Electromagnetic device and method for boundary layer control

A multinode parallel-processing computer is made up of a plurality of innerconnected, large capacity nodes each including a reconfigurable pipeline of functional units such as Integer Arithmetic Logic Processors, Floating Point Arithmetic Processors, Special Purpose Processors, etc. The reconfigurable pipeline of each node is connected to a multiplane memory by a Memory-ALU switch NETwork (MASNET). The reconfigurable pipeline includes three (3) basic substructures formed from functional units which have been found to be sufficient to perform the bulk of all calculations. The MASNET controls the flow of signals from the memory planes to the reconfigurable pipeline and vice versa. the nodes are connectable together by an internode data router (hyperspace router) so as to form a hypercube configuration. The capability of the nodes to conditionally configure the pipeline at each tick of the clock, without requiring a pipeline flush, permits many powerful algorithms to be implemented directly.
