Methods and apparatus for retracting the dura away from a cutting tool during a laminectomy procedure. The method includes inserting a memory shape surgical sponge (patty) into an initial epidural space between the dura and the tool used to decompress (e.g., drill) the lamina. As the lamina is further decompressed, the patty tends to spring back toward its nominal position, urging the dura away from the decompression and isolating the dura from the drill.

In one embodiment, a machine learning system for determining the appropriateness of a selected medical intervention includes health-related data sources, the health-related data sources providing at least one data file of a first type, and a second data file of a second type. A machine learning module is configured to receive the first and second data files, perform a normalization procedure on at least one of the first and second data files, and apply at least one previously trained machine learning model to the normalized data files to produce a prediction output. The prediction output may include a confidence level associated with an appropriateness of the selected medical intervention.

Methods and apparatus for posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) surgical procedures. The apparatus includes a sleeve assembly for guiding an interbody graft into position between adjacent anatomical structures. The sleeve includes a first piece having a first internal ramp and a second piece having a second internal ramp opposite the first internal ramp, and an elastic band configured to connect the first and second pieces together. The first and second internal ramps comprise a V shape with an opening therebetween through which the interbody graft is urged during the surgical procedure.

Negatives of variable digital holographic images may be generated based on desired images and generic optical matrices. An original image may be obtained. A geometry associated with a generic optical matrix may be obtained. The generic optical matrix may have pixels corresponding to color and sub-pixels corresponding to non-color effects. The geometry may indicate locations and colors of pixels in the generic optical matrix, and locations and non-color effects of sub-pixels within the pixels. Color separation may be performed on an original image to provide two or more separations. The separations may be indexed to the geometry associated with the generic optical matrix to provide indexed separations. The indexed separations may be merged to provide a negative of the original image.

Systems and methods for generating negatives of variable digital optical images based on desired images and generic optical matrices

Generic optical matrices may have pixels corresponding to color and sub-pixels corresponding to non-color effects. A generic optical matrix may include an array of pixels disposed on a substrate. The array may comprise first pixels corresponding to a first color and second pixels corresponding to a second color. The first and second pixels may be arranged in a motif such that individual ones of the first pixels are positioned adjacent to individual ones of the second pixels. Individual ones of the pixels may comprise sub-pixels. A given pixel may comprise a first and a second sub-pixel. The first sub-pixel may comprise an optical structure configured to reflect or transmit light meeting a first condition. The second sub-pixel may comprise an optical structure configured to reflect or transmit light meeting a second condition. The light reflected or transmitted by the sub-pixels may be the corresponding color of the given pixel.

A thin and flexible radio frequency (RF) antenna tag or label is disclosed which contains an RF circuit connected to an antenna which is created by demetallizing the area around the antenna pattern on a thin, metallized substrate such as a film or paper web. Antenna(s) may be formed on one or both sides of the substrate and can contain printed, holographic, optical variable device, diffractive, dot matrix, computer-generated holograms or computer-generated optical images. The demetallized RF antenna on the substrate can optionally further be transferred to a second substrate or web by means of a cold foil stamping process. The tag or label is thin and flexible, enabling a wide range of applications including RF tagging of anti-theft devices, product packaging of all types, credit cards, passports, admission tickets, stamps, vehicles, badges, fare cards, roadway tolls, customs and immigration checkpoints identification, and animal identification/tracking devices.

Method for the formation of RF antennas by demetallizing

An implant and method for fusion of adjacent vertebra. The implant has a curved plate having bores for reception of bone screws. In one embodiment, aligned medial sots extend longitudinally in the plate. An interbody graft is attached to or is integrally formed with the plate. In use, retraction post are temporarily secured to adjacent vertebrae and the slots aligned with posts. The graft is inserted and adjacent vertebrae are compressed and held until permanent screw fixation is completed. The compression tool and the posts are removed leaving the vertebrae compressed against the graft to promote healing. In an alternate embodiment, the plate carries multiple grafts which are slidably relative to the plate.
