The method serves for measuring the profile of a rough, reflecting surface as a function of the distance between each point of this profile and a polychromatic light source. This object is reached, e.g., by forming a flat light bundle from the light of this source and imagining it on the profile by means of a chromatic lens element. This leads to a light band of different colors, which indicate the profile contour. Analysis by means of a spectral-dispersive apparatus reconstructs the contour profile of the object.

An active flat-design video screen is described, having signal line means arranged in lines and columns, these signal line means, at their crossing points, defining picture elements of the video screen, in which case the lines that are arranged in columns are developed as electrodes and the signal line means that are arranged in lines are developed by means of optical waveguides into which, on the input side, a modulated light signal is coupled and which, at each crossing point, have a device for the coupling-out of the respective light signal. A method of and an apparatus for determining the location or position of a surface element with respect to a reference which utilizes polychromatic light and with a holographic lens on the light focuses individual wavelengths thereof to respective focal points at one of which the surface element can be located. Light reflected from this surface element is then decomposed into the respective wavelengths and the intensities of these wavelengths are analyzed to determine the wavelength of greatest intensity, this being the wavelength whose focus corresponds to the focus of the surface element. A process for the purification of water comprises a step-wise procedure for heating and evaporating water to be purified at different location and then condensing water thus evaporated. The water is heated in the form of a sheet by solar energy while in a pan at least part of the bottom of which is capable of absorbing the heat content of solar radiation, and in which it is covered by a layer of liquid which transmits solar radiation therethrough, is immiscible with water and which has a vapor pressure less than that of water. The liquid is usually an oil. Various mechanical devices are disclosed for optimizing utilization of solar radiation reaching the pan. Evaporation of heated water removed from the sheet of water to the evaporator is preferably effected under reduced pressure.
