A heavy crude oil is fractionated into at least three liquid fractions which include a distillate fraction boiling in the 400.degree. F.-650.degree. F. range and a 650.degree. F.+ boiling range residuum. The distillate cut is hydrodesulfurized and the residuum is hydrodemetallized. The cuts thus hydrotreated, and at least a part of the third liquid fraction, are then combined to form an upgraded synthetic crude oil of relatively low sulfur content and relatively low vanadium and nickel content.

Process for demetallizing and desulfurizing heavy crude oil

A mixture of normally liquid organic compounds, particularly a light cycle oil obtained by the catalytic cracking of petroleum oils, is separated by contacting the mixture with an essentially anhydrous organic sulfoxide, particularly dimethylsulfoxide, to dissolve an organic extract in said sulfoxide and form an extract phase, comprising sulfoxide and the organic extract, and a raffinate phase, comprising the organic raffinate; diluting the extract phase with about 4.0 to 10.0 wt. % of water; separating the diluted extract phase into an aqueous phase, comprising the water containing the sulfoxide dissolved therein, and an organic phase, comprising the organic extract with minor amounts of the sulfoxide and water; fractionating the organic phase to separate the water and sulfoxide from the organic extract, which is suitable for use as a flotation agent; recycling the thus separated water and sulfoxide to the dilution step; drying the aqueous phase to remove the water and produce an essentially anhydrous sulfoxide; and recycling the sulfoxide to the solvent extraction step.

Method for separating normally liquid organic compounds

A new composition of matter comprises nickel phosphate and titanium phosphate, prepared by coprecipitation. A process for removing metals from a hydrocarbon-containing feed stream, in particular a heavy oil, comprises hydrotreatment in the presence of a solid catalyst composition comprising coprecipitated nickel phosphate and titanium phosphate.

Coprecipitate of metal phosphates

A new composition of matter comprises nickel phosphate and titanium phosphate, preferably prepared by coprecipitation. A process for removing metals from a hydrocarbon-containing feed stream, in particular a heavy oil, comprises hydrotreatment in the presence of a solid catalyst composition comprising nickel phosphate and titanium phosphate (preferably coprecipitated).

Hydrodemetallization of oils with catalysts comprising nickel phosphate

A process for removing metals from a hydrocarbon-containing feed stream comprises hydrotreatment in the presence of a solid catalyst composition comprising aluminum phosphate, zirconium phosphate and copper phosphate (preferably coprecipitated).

Hydrodemetallization of oils

Hydrocarbon-containing feed streams, which contain at least about 5 ppmw nickel and at least about 10 ppmw vanadium, are hydrodemetallized either (I) in the presence of a catalyst composition consisting essentially of (a) a support material (preferably alumina), and (b) at least one lanthanide metal compound (preferably CeO.sub.2 and/or Ce.sub.2 O.sub.3); or (II) in the presence of a catalyst composition comprising (a) a support material (preferably alumina), (b) at least one lanthanide metal compound (preferably La.sub.2 O.sub.3) and (c) at least one manganese compound (preferably at least one manganese oxide).

Catalytic hydrofining of oil

At least one decomposable molybdenum dithiocarbamate compound is mixed with a hydrocarbon-containing feed stream. The hydrocarbon-containing feed stream containing such decomposable molybdenum dithiocarbamate compound is then contacted in a hydrofining process with a catalyst composition comprising a support selected from the group consisting of alumina, silica and silica-alumina and a promoter comprising at least one metal selected from Group VIB, Group VIIB and Group VIII of the Periodic Table. The introduction of the decomposable molybdenum dithiocarbamate compound may be commenced when the catalyst is new, partially deactivated or spent with a beneficial result occurring in each case.

Hydrofining process for hydrocarbon containing feed streams

At least one decomposable compound selected from the group consisting of compounds of the metals of Group IIB and Group IIIB of the Periodic Table is mixed with a hydrocarbon-containing feed stream. The hydrocarbon-containing feed stream containing such decomposable compound is then contacted in a hydrofining process with a catalyst composition comprising a support selected from the group consisting of alumina, silica and silica-alumina and a promoter comprising at least one metal selected from Group VIB, Group VIIB and Group VIII of the Periodic Table. The introduction of the decomposable compound may be commenced when the catalyst is new, partially deactivated or spent with a beneficial result occurring in each case.

The reaction product of a mercaptoalcohol and a molybdenum compound selected from the group consisting of molybdic acids, alkali metal salts of molybdic acids and ammonium salts of molybdic acids is mixed with a hydrocarbon-containing feed stream. The hydrocarbon-containing feed stream containing such reaction product is then contacted in a hydrofining process with a catalyst composition comprising a support selected from the group consisting of Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, SiO.sub.2, Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 --SiO.sub.2, Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 --TiO.sub.2, Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 --P.sub.2 O.sub.5, Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 --BPO.sub.4, Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 --AlPO.sub.4, Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 --Zr.sub.3 (PO.sub.4).sub.4, Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 --SnO.sub.2 and Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 --ZnO and a promoter comprising at least one metal selected from Group VIB, Group VIIB and Group VIII of the Periodic Table. The introduction of the reaction product may be commenced when the catalyst is new, partially deactivated or spent with a beneficial result occuring in each case.

At least one decomposable compound selected from the group consisting of dimanganese decacarbonyl and chromium hexacarbonyl is mixed with a hydrocarbon-containing feed stream. The hydrocarbon containing feed stream containing such decomposable compound is then contacted in a hydrofining process with a catalyst composition comprising a support selected from the group consisting of alumina, silica and silica-alumina and a promoter comprising at least one metal selected from Group VIB, Group VIIB and Group VIII of the Periodic Table. The introduction of the decomposable compound may be commenced when the catalyst is new, partially deactivated or spent with a beneficial result occurring in each case.

At least one decomposable molybdenum dithiophosphate compound is mixed with a hydrocarbon-containing feed stream. The hydrocarbon-containing feed stream containing such decomposable molybdenum dithiophosphate compound is then contacted in a hydrofining process with a catalyst composition comprising a support selected from the group consisting of alumina, silica and silica-alumina and a promoter comprising at least one metal selected from Group VIB, Group VIIB and Group VIII of the Periodic Table. The introduction of the decomposable molybdenum dithiophosphate compound may be commenced when the catalyst is new, partially deactivated or spent with a beneficial result occuring in each case.

At least one decomposable compound selected from the group consisting of compounds of the metals of Group IVB of the Periodic Table is mixed with a hydrocarbon-containing feed stream. The hydrocarbon-containing feed stream containing such decomposable compound is then contacted in a hydrofining process with a catalyst composition comprising a support selected from the group consisting of alumina, silica and silica-alumina and a promoter comprising at least one metal selected from Group VIB, Group VIIB and Group VIII of the Periodic Table. The introduction of the decomposable compound may be commenced when the catalyst is new, partially deactivated or spent with a beneficial result occuring in each case.

The upgrading of heavy, high-metals content oils is optimized when certain solvent mixing and countercurrent flow techniques and/or certain solvent/feed ratios and/or certain extractor internals and extraction residence times are employed.

Solvent extraction

The process described uses a C.sub.2 -C.sub.10 hydrocarbon solvent and an organophosphorous compound to extract metals from metal containing oils. Preferably, the extraction is performed above the critical conditions of the solvent.

Metals removal with a light hydrocarbon and an organophosphorous compound

The recovery of hydrocarbon values from high metals content feeds can be carried out more efficiently via supercritical extraction with recycle of a portion of the asphalt product and proper control of the use of countercurrent solvent flow to said extraction.
