A piston ring for a piston of an internal combustion engine or a compressor may include a substantially annular shaped body defining an inner surface facing towards a groove configured to receive the body, an upper surface facing towards a combustion chamber and extending substantially at a right angle to the inner surface, and a lower surface disposed substantially opposite the upper surface. A layer of thermally insulating coating may be disposed at least partially on at least one of the inner surface, the upper surface and the lower surface.

The invention relates to a method for producing a piston ring () for a piston () of an internal combustion engine, comprising a ring back (), an upper ring flank (), a lower ring flank (), and a running surface (), and the method comprising the following method steps: (a) preparing a ring blank (') with a ring back (&#x2032;), an upper ring flank (&#x2032;), a lower ring flank (&#x2032;), and an outer lateral face (&#x2032;), (b) shaping an asymmetrical convex contour () along the outer lateral face (&#x2032;) and shaping a radially outward-extending protrusion () in the outer lateral surface (&#x2032;) in the region of the lower ring flank (&#x2032;), (c) coating the outer lateral surface (&#x2032;) with a coating material, (d) removing the protrusion (), thereby exposing the material of the ring blank (&#x2032;) in the shape of a circumferential surface () which blends into the coating (), and forming an oil scraper edge () between the circumferential surface () and the lower ring flank (&#x2032;), and (e) post and/or final processing of the coated ring blank (&#x2032;) to obtain a finished piston ring ().
