Embodiments of the invention provide a power supply unit that operates in a standby mode and in a normal mode. The power supply unit comprises a first power supply providing output voltages during the standby mode and a second power supply providing output voltages during the normal mode. A pre-converter provides a stabilized supply voltage for the first and second power supply. The pre-converter operates as an up-converter during the normal operation mode and is switched off during the standby mode together with the second power supply.

Power supply unit

The switched mode power supply comprises an inductor, a switching transistor, a controller circuit coupled to the switching transistor, a rectifying means and a feedback regulation loop for providing a stabilised output voltage. It comprises further a protection circuit coupled to an output or input of a comparator of the controller circuit for providing an overvoltage protection in case of a failure of the regulation loop. The protection circuit comprises in particular an integrating circuit and a comparating circuit. In a preferred embodiment, an output of the protection circuit is coupled to a sense input of the controller circuit, for switching off the controller circuit immediately in case of a failure. In another aspect of the invention, the protection circuit comprises further a second comparator coupled to the first comparating circuit for the surveillance of the input voltage of the switched mode power supply, and for the detection of a short circuit of the inductor or the rectifying means.

Over-voltage protection circuit for a switched mode power supply

The circuit arrangement comprises a driver stage and a control circuit coupled to the control input of a switching transistor. The driver stage provides a switching voltage for the operation of the switching transistor, and the control circuit provides a shaping of the switching voltage in the sense of delaying the switching through of the switching transistor. The control circuit comprises in particular a control transistor, which is coupled a control input via a high pass filter to the output of the driver stage and with an current input to the control input of the switching transistor. The switching transistor is for example a MOSFET being used for switching on and off a capacitive load.

Circuit arrangement for the operation of a switching transistor

The driver circuit for driving a switching transistor comprises a driver transformer for driving the switching transistor and an output stage for driving the driver transformer, and an output of the driver circuit is used for providing also said switching voltage. The switching voltage is derived advantageously from the primary winding of the driver transformer. Preferably a terminal of the primary winding of the driver transformer is directly wired to the gate electrode of the MOS transistor.

Driver circuit for driving a switching transistor

The high voltage supply for a picture tube comprises a high voltage transformer, which generates the anode voltage of the picture tube, and a high voltage module with a switched mode power supply for providing a grid voltage, which is higher than the anode voltage. The output of the high voltage transformer is coupled to the transformer of the switched mode power supply, for adding the output voltage of the switched mode power supply to the high voltage of the high voltage transformer. Preferably, the transformer of the switched mode power supply provides the high voltage isolation, and at least the high voltage part of the module including the transformer is potted with a resin. The high voltage module provides advantageously also an output for a connection to the anode of the picture tube, so that the module can be used with present high voltage transformers, without requiring any modification. The primary side of the switched mode power supply comprises a control stage with adjustable means for setting a specific output voltage of the power supply. In a preferred embodiment, this output voltage is adjustable between 300 and 500 Volts, with respect to the high voltage of the high voltage transformer.

High voltage supply for a picture tube

The battery-operated power supply unit, which comprises a switching transistor whose current terminals are connected in series with a battery, in the current path of the power supply unit, comprises a protective circuit, which is arranged across the current terminals of the switching transistor and evaluates the differential voltage across the switching transistor. The switching transistor is in particular a MOSFET with a parallel-connected internal diode. In the event of too high a differential voltage, the power supply unit or an appliance connected downstream is switched off, so that the switching transistor is not destroyed in the event of a fault. The protective circuit contains, in particular, a threshold circuit with a transistor whose base and emitter are connected across the current terminals of the switching transistor and whose base bias voltage is set via a voltage divider in such a way that, in the event of too high a differential voltage, the transistor switches on and, in this way, triggers a turn-off signal via the collector.

Battery-operated power supply unit

A line deflection circuit for a television receiver or a switched-mode power supply operate with a switching transistor that is connected in series with the primary winding of a transformer and is periodically switched on and off by a switching voltage. In such a circuit, appreciable turn-on and turn-off losses, which reduce the overall efficiency of the circuit, are produced at the switching transistor, particularly at higher operating frequencies. Within a control circuit a DC voltage source is connected to the base of the switching transistor via a periodically actuated switch element and a coil having a core and a tap. The two parts of the coil are wound in opposite senses, and the tap is connected via a diode to ground or to the emitter of the switching transistor. The control circuit further includes a charge-reversal path via which, during a demagnetization phase of the coil, the energy stored in the coil in the form of a current is transferred in the form of a negative voltage to a capacitor that is coupled via a second diode to a first part of the coil. The negative voltage is applied during a residual time subsequent to the demagnetization phase as a reverse voltage to the base of the switching transistor.

A switching power supply includes a switching transistor coupled to a winding of a first transformer for generating a collector current. The collector current is coupled in a current path that includes that winding and a primary winding of a power transformer. The collector current is coupled to the base of the switching transistor via the first transformer such that when the switching transistor is conductive, both the collector current and a base current of the transistor are upramping. When the transistor is nonconductive, a horizontal synchronizing signal is coupled via the first transformer to synchronize the base current.

Switching power supply

A high voltage transformer is provided for the voltage employed in the line deflection of an electron beam in a television receiver. The secondary high voltage winding is inserted into a case via an opening running parallel to the axis of the primary and secondary winding and is disposed in the case separate from the primary winding and is surrounded by a cast plastic resin. Preferably, the secondary winding body snaps into elastically supported protrusions disposed at the case. The plastic resin is filled into position through said opening. The high voltage connection is immersed into the plastic resin and is then led outwardly.
