A remote emergency light system provides a base unit that is electrically coupled to one or more remote emergency light fixtures using cables. The base unit may provide power to each of the remote emergency light fixtures using the cables to activate the remote emergency light fixtures during an emergency condition. Alternatively, the base unit may provide a trickle charge to one or more remote emergency light fixtures when each of the remote emergency light fixtures includes an energy charging device. The base unit may be configured to communicate with the remote emergency light fixtures and determine when a trickle charge should be sent to a remote emergency light fixture, when a trickle charge should be stopped for a remote emergency light fixture, and/or when an energy charging device needs to be replaced. The cables can meet the requirements for Class 2 circuits as defined by the National Electric Code.

Providing power to remote emergency light fixtures

An electrical system can include a power supply that provides primary power, and a light fixture having at least one light source, where the light fixture is coupled to the power supply, where the at least one light source illuminates when the light fixture receives the primary power. The electrical system can further include an energy storage unit having at least one energy storage device that charges using the primary power. The electrical system can also include a controller that determines an initial charging period during which the at least one energy storage device is charged using a constant supply of the primary power, where the controller changes the constant supply of the primary power to a trickle charge of the primary power at the end of the initial charging period to maintain a minimum charge level of the at least one energy storage device.

Constant power output from emergency battery packs

Exit and egress lighting, emergency lighting or emergency light fixture, having internal supercapacitor power sources are recharged after a power outage using a staggered power up process. For example, once an emergency light fixture detects a power-on transition from power being unavailable on a power source to power being available from the power source, the fixture waits a predetermined time to recharge a supercapacitor based on a charge time delay value. The predetermined time may be selected to be unique for one or several emergency light fixtures so as to distribute a combined peak power demand of the fixtures. After the predetermined time has expired, the supercapacitor is electrically coupled to a power source to in order to recharge the supercapacitor.

Timed charge-up and illumination

An emergency lighting device includes an internal battery, a switching mechanism, and one or more light sources. The light sources are electrically coupled to the internal battery through the switching mechanism. The switching mechanism includes a first contact and a second contact. Additionally, the switching mechanism is configured to receive an external mechanical disconnect male jack to electrically disconnect the light sources from the internal battery. In certain embodiments, the emergency lighting device is also electrically coupled to an external power source and includes a circuit breaker for providing power to the light sources from the external power supply during normal operation and for automatically providing power to the light sources from the internal battery in the event that power from the external power source fails.

Timed supercapacitor charge-up and emergency illumination

A photocontroller operates one or more lamps, such as a GU24 compact fluorescent lamp, based on ambient light to provide dusk-to-dawn operation. The photocontroller includes a photosensor for detecting the level of ambient light. The photosensor provides a signal to a photocontrol circuit that controls a switching device to selectively provide power to the lamp based on the level of ambient light detected by the photosensor. A fault detection circuit monitors the level of ambient light and the status of the lamp to determine whether the photocontroller is operating properly. The fault detection circuit determines the status of the lamp based on current flow to the lamp as determined by a current sensor. In addition, the photocontroller can include a processor for performing certain photocontrol and fault monitoring functions.
