A vehicle includes a system that performs a method of operating the vehicle. The system includes a road grade sensor for measuring a road grade of a road section being traversed by the vehicle, a speedometer for measuring a vehicle speed, a power flow direction sensor for obtaining a power flow direction of the vehicle, a pedal position sensor for measuring a pedal position, and a processor. The processor is configured to determine an axle torque upper limit for a motor of the vehicle based on the road grade, the vehicle speed and the power flow direction, determine an axle torque request based on the vehicle speed and the pedal position, determine a clipped axle torque request from the axle torque request and the axle torque upper limit, and control the vehicle by implementing the clipped axle torque request at the vehicle.

Axle torque grade assist

The concepts described herein relate to a calculation of desired future longitudinal horizons related to torque or acceleration, and desired future lateral horizons related to yaw rate and lateral velocity, and their use in response to driver-selectable modes. In the longitudinal direction, driver inputs of pedal and brake position as well as drivability metrics are used to calculate the desired future torque trajectory. In the lateral direction, the front and rear steering angles may be used with a bicycle model to derive the trajectories. The trajectories are used in a vehicle motion controller that uses weighting to tradeoff competing requests and deliver performance that is consistent with a selected driver mode, such as a tour mode, a sport mode, an off-road mode, a trailering mode, etc.

Method and system for controlling vehicle operation

A powertrain system is controlled to deliver axle torque in response to an operator accelerator pedal input. Axle torque is determined by metrics including historical control information, current control information, and future control information.

Axle torque response system and method

A control system for an engine includes a speed error determination module that periodically determines an engine speed error rate based on a difference between a measured speed and a desired speed of the engine, and a torque reserve module that monitors the engine speed error rate and that selectively adjusts a torque reserve of the engine based on the engine speed error rate. The torque reserve module maintains the torque reserve at a predetermined first torque reserve amount while the engine speed error rate is less than a predetermined first error rate and selectively increases the torque reserve above the first torque reserve amount when the engine speed error rate increases above a predetermined second error rate greater than the first error rate. The torque reserve module decreases the torque reserve when the engine speed error rate decreases below the first error rate. A related method is also provided.
