A method is provided for an electronics device user interface (UI) to create a rules-validated service request. Initially, a UI device presents a plurality of selections, and accepts a selection command from a user. A UI application sends the selection command to a rules engine. The rules engine compares the selection command to a rules collection cross-referencing selection commands to allowable selection commands, wherein a rule is defined as a relationship between service parameters. In response to the rules engine validating the selection commands, the UI application sends a service request including the selection commands to a service device, and the service device performs a service defined in the service request. In response to the rules engine invalidating the selection command, the UI device may present an explanation of a rule violation associated with the invalid selection command. An associated system is also provided.

Rules based user interface architecture

A method and system for implementing custom scheduling policies including making alterations to internal task scheduling policies or firmware operating within the MFP throughout the lifetime of the MFP. Internal task scheduling policy alterations can be made either remotely or on-site at a customer location. Custom scheduling policies can be implemented for different periods of time. The MFP includes a task run-time controller to receive and process the internal task scheduling policy alterations. The task run-time controller includes a task tuner, which may implement the internal task scheduling policy alterations responsive to usage characteristics of the MFP.

Custom scheduling and control of a multifunction printer

A system and method are provided for appending element files to a print container in a multifunctional peripheral (MFP) device. The method accepts a first element file and a print container including a second element file. Examples of element files other print containers, fixed documents, application-specific documents, page description language (PDL) documents, extensible markup language (XML) paper specification (XPS) fixed documents, facsimile documents, and scanned documents. The method modifies the print container to include the second element file and the first element file preserved as separate entities, and stores the modified print container in a tangible memory medium.

Multifunctional peripheral print container modification

An embedded system configured to reduce volatile memory usage by loading individual software components includes a processor, volatile memory in electronic communication with the processor and non-volatile memory in electronic communication with the processor. The non-volatile memory includes an operating system, a loader application, a loading table and multiple individual software components. The non-volatile memory also includes loading instructions that load and start the operating system. The loading instructions also load and start the loader application. The loading table is then examined to determine which of the individual software components are to be loaded into the volatile memory. Next, each of the individual software components that are to be loaded as indicated in the loading table are loaded into the volatile memory.

Systems and methods for reducing memory usage in an embedded system by loading individual software components

Structure and methodology for creating a content-informative audit trail derived from text, vector information and imagery, and taking the form of a reduced-size data extraction from a document-job data-stream, such as a data-stream which exists in the context of a document printing, copying, scanning, e-mailing, and faxing job, etc. Selected, reduced-content components of a subject document data-stream are extracted according to various extraction approaches, and extracted information is stored in a appropriate storage site for later review to give an indication of just what printing, scanning, copying, etc activity has taken place with respect to different identified documents.

Thumbnail audit trail in MFP and print processor/spooler-based print-job auditing

A system and method are provided for adaptively allocating random access memory (RAM) in an multifunctional peripheral (MFP) device with a plurality of components. The method comprises: supplying an interface; and, in response to interface prompts, selecting the allocation of RAM for MFP features or components. Typically, the MFP device includes fax, scanner, printer, and copier components, and the method further comprises selecting the allocation of RAM for MFP components selected from the group including fax, scanner, printer, or copier. The method further comprises: selecting the allocation of RAM for MFP features selected from the group including post script (PS) documents, printer control language (PCL) documents, tagged image file format (TIFF) documents, or portable document format (PDF) documents. Supplying an interface includes supplying front panel graphical user interface (GUI) to present RAM allocation options, and selecting the allocation of RAM for MFP functions in response to interface prompts includes allocating portions of RAM in response to GUI prompts. Alternately, the MFP is connected to a computer workstation with a display. Then, supplying an interface includes receiving a request from a browser loaded on the computer workstation and, from an embedded web server in the MFP, supplying a GUI to the computer workstation display, presenting RAM allocation options.

System and method for allocating random access memory in a multifunction peripheral device

A method for choosing a compression process for a scanned image includes scanning an image, forming a bitmap of the scanned image and selecting at least one portion of the scanned image as a compression test subject. The selected portion is selected by a variety of compression techniques and a score for each technique is assigned. The compression technique with the best score is then used to compress the entire bitmap of the scanned image.
