A system includes a storage device to store information associated with virtual nodes that correspond to network nodes. The system also includes a server to install a virtual node that corresponds to one of the network nodes, based on the information associated with the virtual node, where installing the virtual node includes creating a logical interface via which traffic is to be sent to, or received from, other virtual nodes; start the virtual node to create an operating virtual node based on a copy of an operating system that is run on the network node, where starting the virtual node causes the operational virtual node to execute the copy of the operating system; and cause the operating virtual node to communicate with a virtual network that includes the virtual nodes, where causing the operating virtual node to communicate with the virtual network enables the operating virtual node to receive or forward traffic associated with the virtual network.

A network router includes interfaces to receive packets, a routing engine that executes a routing protocol to maintain routing information specifying routes through a network, a packet forwarding engine forward the packets to the interfaces in accordance with the routing information, one or more advertising engine service cards comprising a packet inspection engine and an advertising engine control unit, and a set of dynamic filters that identify packets for inspection by the packet inspection engine based on characteristics of the packet. The filters direct any matching ones of the packets from the packet forwarding engine to the packet inspection engine within the advertising engine service card, and the packet inspection engine analyzes the packets to extract information from the packets based on configured advertising engine policies. The advertising engine control unit outputs commands to dynamically add and delete filters from the set of dynamic filters.

The system also includes a server to install a virtual node that corresponds to one of the network nodes, based on the information associated with the virtual node, where installing the virtual node includes creating a logical interface for sending traffic to, or receiving traffic from, other virtual nodes; start the virtual node to create an operating virtual node based on a copy of an operating system that runs on the network node, where starting the virtual node causes the operational virtual node to execute the copy of the operating system; and cause the operating virtual node to communicate with a virtual network, that includes the other virtual nodes, to allow the operating virtual node to receive or forward traffic associated with the virtual network.

A network device may include logic configured to invoke proactive programs based on the expiration of a long time period within the network device, wherein the proactive programs collect data relating to operations of the network device, invoke reactive programs based on the detection of at least one of an event or expiration of a short time period, wherein the reactive programs collect, correlate and analyze data relating to the detected event or expiration of a short time period, determine a corrective action based on collected and analyzed data, and perform the determined corrective action within the network device.
