A system and method for observing and controlling a programmable network via higher layer attributes is disclosed. According to one embodiment, the system includes one or more collectors and a remote network manager. The one or more collectors are configured to receive network traffic data from a plurality of network elements in the network. The remote network manager is configured to connect to the one or more collectors over the Internet via a network interface. The one or more collectors extract metadata from the network traffic data and send the metadata to the network manager.

A system and method for providing automatic closed loop control of a network using a dynamic control loop. The system includes one or more collectors and a remote network manager. The one or more collectors are configured to receive network traffic data from a plurality of network elements in the network. The remote network manager computes an initial control policy to the programmable network elements using (1) high-level policies, security requirements, and any anomalous traffic behavior; (2) configuration capability and current configuration of underlying network elements; (3) network topology, statistics, and tolerable configuration change; and (4) control loop parameters including stability, oscillation, and timescale. The remote network manager sends control policy parameters to the programmable network elements, observes the network, measures effectiveness of the initial control policy with respect to the high-level policy, and computes an updated control policy to send to the programmable network elements.

A power outage detection system. The system includes a device configured to increment a reboot counter when the device is powered up, and to transmit a first message when the device loses power and a second message when the device is powered up, and a back office system. The first message includes the value of the reboot counter and a timestamp, and the second message includes the value of the reboot counter. The back office system includes a finite state machine configured to receive the first and second messages. The finite state machine determines if the received first message is valid using the value of the reboot counter and the timestamp, and determines if the received second message is valid using the value of the reboot counter. The finite state machine then outputs an accurate indication of the state of the device.

Systems and methods of optimizing packet flow in a network are disclosed. An internetwork has a first network and plural second networks. A respective packet-in-flight counter is established for each one of the plural second networks and a respective maximum packet-in-flight indication for each one of the plural second networks. The respective packet-in-flight counter for each one of the plural second networks when a request packet is sent from any node in the first network to any node in that one of the plural second networks, or a response packet is received from any node that one of the plural second networks. it is determined whether a second request packet can be sent from any node in the first network to any of the plurality of nodes in one of the plural second networks, based on processing a value of the respective packet-in-flight counter for that one of the plural second networks and a value of the respective maximum packet-in-flight indication for that one of the plural second networks. The respective maximum packet-in-flight indication for each one of the plural second networks is adjusted based on a statistic that is indicative of roundtrip time for request packets sent from any node of the first network to any of the plurality of nodes in that one of the plural second networks.
