A request to monitor a data packet to be transmitted from a first location to a second location over a first network is received. A projected time for the transmission of the data packet from the first location to the second location is determined. Responsive to determining the projected time, whether the data packet arrived at the second location after the projected time plus a variance is determined.

Offline, realtime, and historic monitoring of data packets

A physical host executes a virtual machine monitor (VMM) that instantiates a source virtual machine (VM). In response to the VMM receiving from the source VM a packet specifying a first destination address of a destination VM and a second destination address of a default gateway, the VMM determines whether the packet can be communicated to the destination VM without the packet being routed by the default gateway. In response to the VMM determining that the packet can be communicated to the destination VM without the packet being routed by the default gateway, the VMM forwards the packet to the destination VM such that the packet bypasses routing by the default gateway.

Hypervisor routing between networks in a virtual networking environment

There are provided a system, a method and a computer program product for managing one or more network devices. The one or more network devices are connected indirectly or directly to one or more networks and communicate each other by exchanging one or more messages. A classifier intercepts the one or more messages associated with one or more network devices. The classifier classifies each of the intercepted messages into a layer. A discovery system receives the each classified message and detecting, based on the each received classified message, a new network device added to the one or more networks and detecting one or more configuration changes made on the one or more network devices.

Accelerating device, connection and service discovery

A method and system for testing a Virtualized Network Function (VNF) in a network. Metadata including test parameters pertaining to a network environment specific to the VNF is retrieved. At least one Virtualized Network Tester (VNT) for testing the VNF is created and stored in the network. The metadata is mapped to a test list to define a test suite of test cases based on the test parameters in the metadata. The VNF is tested by the at least one VNT according to the test suite to enable the at least one VNT to emulate the network environment specific to the VNF. The VNF is disconnected from the network and from virtual networks during the testing. If the testing is successful, the VNF is attached to the network and to virtual networks to enable the VNF to be deployed in the network. If the testing is unsuccessful, the method ends.

Testing a virtualized network function in a network

Temporally classifying and visually representing network and IT infrastructure with planned or occurred configuration activities and/or policy compliance or non-compliance of network and IT resources, including a method, apparatus and computer program for gathering and classifying observable configuration aspects of resources and relationships in a network of resources, wherein the method comprises: analyzing the network of resources to collect planned configuration times and actual resource status; monitoring actual resource status to make determinations if planned configurations are executed; and updating a network configuration status with the determinations. Planned and actual configurations are collected and monitored over a defined time range extending before and/or after a time zero. Each planned or actual configuration is categorized with respect to one or more time windows in the defined time range.

Methods, apparatus, and products for inferred discovery of a data communications device connected to a router, unreachable by a management module, and characterized by a device address are disclosed that include querying, by the management module, the router for connection data and identifying, by the management module in dependence upon the connection data, the device address.

Inferred discovery of a data communications device

A consumer system receives capabilities metadata from a producer system that includes resource class metrics for a resource class included in the producer system. Next, the consumer system creates a rule that corresponds to one of the consumer system's managed entities. The rule includes one or more prescriptions that reference the resource class metrics and specify a periodicity, which informs the producer system as to a time interval for which to send prescription results that includes metric information pertaining to the resource class metrics. The consumer system sends the rule to the producer system and, in turn, the consumer system receives the prescription results from the producer system at the specified periodicity and applies the metric information to the managed entity.

Scale between consumer systems and producer systems of resource monitoring data

A method, system, and computer program product for locating a network fault are provided in the illustrative embodiments. A set of network probes is configured to execute at a corresponding set of networking components in a data network. A set of events is received. An event in the set of events includes a list of network probes in an order those network probes are visited, the list of network probes forming a path in a set of paths. A test is performed to determine whether a fault condition is present in any of the paths. Those paths are selected, as a set of candidate paths, where the fault condition is present. At least one segment of a specified length is located that is common to a threshold number of paths in the set of candidate paths. The located segment is suggested as the location of the network fault.

Automated network fault location

A method, system and computer-usable medium for discovering the topology of a network by using multiple discovery agents operating in parallel. A NodeList containing information about known nodes in a target network is received. The number ('K') of discovery agents to be used is determined, where 1&#x3c;=K&#x3c;=TotalNumberOfNodes). The nodes are partitioned into node groups, each of which has a group identifier respectively assigning it to a discovery agent 'M' where 1&#x3c;=M&#x3c;=K. A GraphList is created to hold information about known and discovered nodes. Each entry in the NodeList list is processed by its assigned discovery agent &#x2018;M&#x2019;, which sends probe messages to the target node to determine the node identifiers of discovered neighboring nodes.

Method and apparatus for concurrent topology discovery

A method, system and computer-usable medium are disclosed for suppressing managed endpoint (MEP) child events in a network. A MEP multicast message is broadcast by an originating MEP. Responses received from peer MEPs within a selected time interval are processed to determine their respective IP address, MAC address, and VLAN. If this information is not currently stored in a table of peer MEP device information associated with the originating MEP, then it is added. The responding MEP is then marked in the peer MEP device table as having responded. Peer MEP devices that have responded to previous multicast messages, but have now failed to respond within the selected time interval, are determined. A MEP network event is generated, comprising the IP address of the device containing the MEP, the MAC address for inward-facing MEPs, the MAC address of the associated bridge, the port addresses for outward-facing MEPs, and associated VLAN information. If another MEP network event occurs, the MAC address of the MEP and its VLAN information is determined. If the VLAN associated with the current MEP network event contains a MAC address associated with a prior MEP network event, then the MEP network event is designated as a child MEP network event and suppressed. Otherwise, the MEP network event is designated as a parent MEP network.

System and method for correlating carrier ethernet connectivity fault management events

A method, apparatus, and computer program product for discovering network paths between network devices in a distance-vector network are provided. The method may include providing a node model of network devices in a distance-vector network. The node model may include a network address corresponding to a network device. The network address may be used to query the network device for routing information. This routing information may be used to identify another network address corresponding to a second network device, and to identify a path from the first network device to the second network device. These devices and the path therebetween may be mapped in the node model. Finally, the second network device may be queried for subsequent routing information to identify and map subsequent devices and paths.

Method, apparatus and computer program product for correlating performance events in a data processing system. A first event is received at one of a first device and a second device of the data processing system, and a second event is received at one of the first device and the second device. A type of a connection between the first device and the second device is identified to form an identified type of connection, and a relationship between the first event and the second event is determined based on the identified type of connection between the first device and the second device.
