A method is described for seismic imaging that will produce a seismic image with correctly focused and positioned reflectors. This is accomplished by adding physical geological information to a beam tomography process to generate an updated earth model for the seismic imaging. The method may be executed by a computer system.

A method is described for modifying an earth model including receiving an earth model containing one or more surfaces with surface geometries, such that at least two surface depth locations exist for some horizontal positions; perturbing elastic properties within the earth model; and generating a modified earth model by modifying the surface geometries within the earth model while preserving seismic travel times of the earth model such that after an initial user parameterization all updates of the surfaces are done without additional user input. The method may be executed by a computer system.

A method of modifying a seismic image of a subsurface region includes identifying a location within the seismic image that includes a distortion, indicating a structural change associated with the distortion, that is selected to at least partially correct for the distortion, identifying a region causing the distortion in which corrections to a velocity model corresponding to the seismic image are to be applied, performing an inversion for the region in accordance with the indicated structural change, updating the velocity model on the basis of the inversion, and producing a modified seismic image on the basis of the updated velocity model.

There is provided herein a system and method of acquiring, processing, and imaging transient Controlled Source ElectroMagnetic (t-CSEM) data in ways that are similar to those used for seismic data. In particular, the instant invention exploits the time-distance characteristics of t-CSEM data to permit the design and execution of t-CSEM surveys for optimal subsequent processing and imaging. The instant invention illustrates how to correct t-CSEM data traces for attenuation and dispersion, so that their characteristics are more like those of seismic data and can be processed using algorithms familiar to the seismic processor. The resulting t-CSEM images, particularly if combined with corresponding seismic images, may be used to infer the location of hydrocarbon reservoirs.
