A method that includes receiving, from one or more motion sensors in a device, data describing a signature arc in three-dimensional space, the signature arc having been generated by gesturing using the device; identifying, from the data describing the gestured signature arc, a plurality of points that correspond to the gestured signature arc in three-dimensional space; generating a curve along the identified plurality of points corresponding to the gestured signature arc; generating a two-dimensional representation of the gestured signature arc; and displaying, on a display screen, the generated two-dimensional representation of the gestured signature arc.

Sensor-based transaction authorization via user device

Users of an identity provider system may be authorized to use a variety of different types of factors from a variety of different factor providers. The identity provider system monitors and analyzes the 'health' of the different possible factors available to a user, e.g., their availability relative to error rate. Using the results of the analysis, the identity provider can assess which factors are the most appropriate for a given user seeking authentication and can improve the user experience for the user by emphasizing those most appropriate factors to the user.

Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer storage media, for ranking devices based on a distance from a merchant device. One of the methods includes displaying, in a point-of-sale system, a listing of buyers located proximate to the point-of-sale system, the buyers having indicated using their mobile devices a desire to pursue a financial transaction in association with the point-of-sale system. The point-of-sale system determines relative distances of the mobile devices of the buyers with respect to the point-of-sale system and arranges the displayed listing in the point-of-sale system based at least in part on the determined relative distances.

A technique for providing a checkout experience using a payment card is disclosed. An electronic device at a store detects a movement of a product away from the store by using a first short-range wireless link. The electronic device then receives from the product information identifying the product. The electronic device also detects the presence of a payment card near the product around the same time that it detects the movement of the product, by using a second short-range wireless link. The electronic device then receives information from the payment card information identifying an account on a server system. Upon determining that the product is at least a certain distance away from the store for at least a certain amount of time, the electronic device processes a payment for the product by the owner of the account.

A payment card reader for reading integrated circuit (IC) payment cards is disclosed. The payment card reader includes a microcontroller having non-programmable logic, coupled with a data input from the IC payment card, configured to effect a first implementation of a communication standard for communication between the microprocessor and the IC payment card, the non-programmable logic comprising a non-programmable hardware timer. The microcontroller also includes extensible logic, coupled with the data input via a general-purpose input/output (GPIO) pin, the extensible logic configured to include an extensible timer and interrupt logic, the extensible timer and interrupt logic for use with the non-programmable logic and the data input to effect a second implementation of the communication standard for communication between the microprocessor and the IC payment card.

Generating a signature with a mobile device

A card reader includes a body, the body being configured for coupling with a device, the device including a device light sensor and a device light source; a reader light sensor that is configured to capture light being emitted from the device light source, wherein, when the body is coupled to the user device, the reader light sensor is positioned adjacent to the device light source; a reader light source that is configured to emit light to the device light sensor, wherein, when the body is coupled to the user device, the reader light source is positioned adjacent to the device light sensor; a reader interface positioned in the body and configured to read the card; and circuitry configured to communicate data between the card reader and the user device using the reader light sensor and the reader light source.

Card reader communication method

Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer storage media, for modulating card information between a card reader and a user device. One of the methods includes receiving, from a read head of the card reader, card information associated with a card. The card information is encoded in a first format to be sent to the user device at a first data rate. The card information is encoded in a second format to be sent to the user device at a second data rate lower than the first data rate. The card information is sent to the user device encoded in the first format and the second format.

Encoding data in multiple formats

Read head array stitching techniques are described. A card reader includes an array of magnetic sensors (a read head array) for retrieving account information from a magnetic stripe of a financial transaction card. The magnetic sensors can be arranged in rows and columns. During a card swipe, each magnetic sensor receives a series of readings. A processor determines relative bit rates for each series of readings. The processor determines which sensor corresponds to which track of the magnetic stripe based on a comparison of the relative bit rates. The processor generates a data stream for at least one track based on portions of readings from each sensor during periods of time the sensor is determined to correspond to the track.
