A fuel control system for a gas turbine engine includes a fuel metering valve, a pressure raising and shut-off valve (PRSOV), and a shutoff effector including a first stage unit that is electrically powered and a second stage unit that is controlled by the first stage unit. The second stage unit actuates a valve member of the PRSOV between an open position that allows supply of a fuel to burners of the gas turbine engine and a closed position that prevents supply of the fuel to the burners. Upon loss of electrical power to the first stage unit during operation of the gas turbine engine, the first stage unit is configured to: control the second stage unit to actuate the valve member of the PRSOV to the closed position after a predetermined time duration; or retain the valve member of the PRSOV in the open position.

Fuel control system

In general, techniques are described regarding a rotary servo for actuators. A servo assembly includes a cylindrical outer sleeve including ports, a cylindrical outer spool annularly disposed within the cylindrical outer sleeve, a stepper motor mechanically coupled to the cylindrical outer spool, and an actuator mechanically coupled to compressor variable geometry that controls compression provided by a compressor. The cylindrical outer spool includes channels configured to provide fluidic interconnection between the ports and a cylindrical inner spool, where the cylindrical inner spool is annularly disposed within the cylindrical outer spool, and the cylindrical inner spool includes grooves configured to provide fluidic interconnection through the channels of the cylindrical outer sleeve. The stepper motor is configured to rotate the cylindrical outer spool within the cylindrical outer sleeve to deliver a fluid to and thereby actuate the actuator to control the compressor variable geometry.

Rotary servo for fixed fail actuators

A combustion staging system for fuel injectors of a multi-stage combustor of a gas turbine engine. The system includes plural fuel injectors, each having respective pilot and mains injection stages. It further includes a splitting unit which, to perform staging control of the combustor, receives a metered fuel flow and, for pilot and mains operation, controllably splits the received fuel flow into a pilot flow for injecting at the pilot stages of the injectors and a mains flow for injecting at the mains stages of the injectors, and for pilot-only operation, controllably splits the received fuel flow into a first part of the pilot flow for injecting at the pilot stages of a first portion of the injectors and a second part of the pilot flow for injecting at the pilot stages of a second portion of the injectors.

Combustion staging system

A combustion staging system has: a splitter; pilot and mains fuel manifolds; mains flow control valves; and fuel servo line. Each mains flow control valve has a chamber containing a piston, the chamber to a piston mains side fed by the mains fuel manifold, and the chamber to a piston servo side fed by the servo line. The piston has an open pilot-and-mains position allowing flow from the chamber mains side to the respective injector mains discharge orifice. The piston prevents flow from the chamber mains side. The piston is movable under a pressure change in the servo line relative to the mains fuel manifold. The system has a servo pump and a hydraulic motor driving it. The servo pump changes fuel pressure. Motive power for the hydraulic motor is fuel diverted from a fuel pump high pressure output, the motor returning the diverted fuel to a low pressure input.

A combustion staging system is provided for fuel injectors of a multi-stage combustor of a gas turbine engine. The system has a splitting unit which receives a metered total fuel flow and controllably splits the metered total fuel flow into out-going pilot and mains fuel flows to perform pilot-only and pilot-and-mains staging control of the combustor. The splitting unit includes a metering valve and a spill valve, a first portion of the total metered fuel flow received by the splitting unit being an inflow to the metering valve and a second portion of the total metered fuel flow received by the splitting unit being an inflow to the spill valve. The metering valve is configured to controllably determine a fuel flow rate of a metered outflow formed from the first portion of the total metered fuel flow.

A combustion staging system is provided for fuel injectors of a multi-stage combustor of a gas turbine engine. The system has a splitting unit which receives a metered total fuel flow and controllably splits the metered total fuel flow into out-going pilot and mains fuel flows to perform pilot-only and pilot-and-mains staging control of the combustor. The system further has pilot and mains fuel manifolds which respectively receive the pilot and mains fuel flows, the mains fuel manifold being split into a primary line and a servo line such that each line receives a respective portion of the mains fuel flow. The system further has a plurality of mains flow control valves which distribute the mains fuel flow from the mains fuel manifold to mains discharge orifices of respective injectors of the combustor, both the primary line and the servo line extending to the mains flow control valves before reuniting. The system further has a servo pump operable to change the pressure in the servo line relative to the pressure in the primary line. Each mains flow control valve has a chamber containing a movable piston, the chamber to a primary side of the piston being fed by the primary line, and the chamber to a servo side of the piston being fed by the servo line. The piston is biased towards a closed pilot-only position which prevents flow out of the primary side of the chamber to the mains discharge orifice of the respective injector. The piston is movable under an increase in pressure in the servo line relative to the primary line to an open pilot-and-mains position which allows flow out of the primary side of the chamber to the mains discharge orifice of the respective injector.

An aircraft fuel pumping arrangement comprises a first fuel pump, an electrically powered motor operable to drive the first fuel pump to deliver fuel to an outlet, a second fuel pump, a gas driven turbine operable to drive the second fuel pump to deliver fuel to the outlet, and a controller operable to control the operation of the gas driven turbine to determine the rate at which the second fuel pump is driven.

Fuel pumping arrangement for an aircraft engine

A combustion staging system has a splitting unit receiving and splitting metered fuel flow into out-going pilot and mains flows; pilot and mains fuel manifolds receiving the pilot and mains flows; and parallel mains flow scheduling valves distributing the mains flow. The mains flow scheduling valves pass the pilot fuel flow to injector pilot discharge orifices. Each mains flow scheduling valve has a chamber containing a piston, the chamber to a piston pilot side communicating with the pilot fuel manifold and the chamber to a mains side of the piston communicating with the mains fuel manifold. The piston is biased towards a closed pilot-only position preventing flow out of the chamber mains side to the injector mains discharge orifice. The piston is movable under increased pressure in the mains fuel manifold to an open pilot-and-mains position allowing flow out of the chamber mains side to the injector mains discharge orifice.

A fuel system comprises a fuel pump operable to deliver fuel through a supply line to a pressure raising valve, the pressure raising valve including a control chamber, the fuel pressure within the control chamber controlling a minimum pump pressure differential, and an actuator control servo-valve operable to control the supply of fuel from the supply line to an actuator control line, wherein the actuator control servo-valve further controls the pressure of fuel applied to the control chamber of the pressure raising valve.

Fuel metering control

A fuel control system comprises a metering valve operable to control the flow of fuel between a supply line and a delivery line, a spill valve operable to control fuel flow within the supply line, a pressure raising valve connected to the delivery line, and a control servo valve movable between a thrust control mode in which it modifies the control of the spill valve to reduce the fuel flow delivered via the metering valve and an outlet of the pressure raising valve, and a windmill relight position in which it modifies the control of the pressure raising valve to allow fuel delivery through the outlet of the pressure raising valve at a reduced system pressure.

A fuel system comprises a first, variable displacement fuel pump operable to supply fuel through a metering valve to an engine, a control servo operable to control the operation of the first pump, a pressure drop control valve (PDCV) responsive to a pressure drop across the metering valve, a second fuel pump, and a spill valve movable between an open position in which substantially all of the fuel supplied by the second fuel pump is returned to an inlet side thereof, and a closed position, or partially closed position, wherein a proportion of the fuel supplied by the second pump is delivered to the engine.

A method of operating a fuel system to determine the extent of internal wear of a fuel pump thereof comprises driving the fuel pump, moving a metering valve member to a closed position in which the metering valve bears against a resilient stop, increasing the operating speed of the fuel pump to increase the pressure applied to the metering valve member urging the valve member towards the resilient stop to a point beyond which further movement of the metering valve member occurs, sensing when the further movement of the metering valve member occurs, and sensing the operating speed of the pump at the time when the further movement occurs.
