The present invention provides a novel thermal filtering system and method for making such a thermal filtering system to filter out external temperature fluctuations within an enclosure. In accordance with one aspect of the invention the system includes an external insulation layer, an internal insulation layer, and a layer of phase change material located in between and thermally in series with the layers of insulation.

Thermal filtering system

A polyphase electric motor includes a stator having a field winding and a field backiron, and a rotor disposed within the stator including a permanent magnet with a plurality of pole pairs, wherein the field winding includes a plurality of coil segments, each coil segment having a plurality of electrically conductive turns of a polygonal shape, the turns in each coil segment having circumferentially opposite sides, the circumferentially opposite sides of relatively adjacent turns being circumferentially offset with respect to one another in the same circumferential direction so that each coil segment occupies a length generally equal to the arcuate length of two pole faces, each coil segment further including a subsegment of turns electrically commutated in accordance with a different one of a plurality of field phases.

Slotless, brushless, large air-gap electric motor

A slotless brushless, large air gap electric motor comprises a stator having a field winding and field backiron, the field winding being composed of a plurality of successively offset polygonal shaped turns so as to provide a substantially flat winding, and a rotor disposed within the stator including a shaft with a permanent magnet mounted thereon. The field winding turns are preferably in the shape of a rectangle or a hexagonal. Also disclosed is a commutation scheme which dissipates energy stored in a section of the field winding previously energized to the section of the field winding subsequently energized; an integrated circuit for control of any motor using that commutation scheme; a winding configuration suitable for use with both an alternating and direct current power supply; and efficiency increasing magnetically permeable flux shorting elements.

Method of making a slotless, brushless, large air-gap electric motor

A slotless, brushless, large air gap electric motor comprises a stator having a field winding and field backiron, the field winding being composed of a plurality of successively offset polygonal shaped turns so as to provide a substantially flat winding, and a rotor disposed within the stator including a shaft with a permanent magnet mounted thereon. The field winding turns are preferably in the shape of a rectangle or a hexagonal. Also disclosed is a commutation scheme which dissipates energy stored in a section of the field winding previously energized to the section of the field winding subsequently energized; an integrated circuit for control of any motor using that commutation scheme; a winding configuration suitable for use with both an alternating and direct current power supply; and efficiency increasing magnetically permeable flux shorting elements.

Slotless, brushless, large air gap electric motor

A large air gap electric motor has a permanent magnet rotor with a large air gap to a slotless, less, cylindrical core surrounding the rotor. A winding of at least one phase is disposed in the large air gap. This winding is disposed on a coil form wihch is metallized on one face to reflect heat of the winding away from the rotor. The winding is formed from a plurality of pancake coils with a plurality of pancake coils around the periphery in each layer and a plurality of layers in a radial dimension. Each pancake coil in successive layers becomes progressively larger to substantially fill the radial air gap. The surrounding slotless core is made from a spirally wound flux conductor, which may be a flat ribbon of rectangular cross section.

Large air gap motor with rotor heat shield

A large air gap electric motor has a permanent magnet rotor with a large air gap to a slotless, cylindrical core surrounding the rotor. A winding of at least one phase is disposed in the large air gap. This winding is disposed on a coil form which is metallized on one face to reflect heat of the winding away from the rotor. The winding is formed of pancake coils, with a plurality of pancake coils around the periphery in each layer and a plurality of layers in the radial dimension. Each pancake coil in successive outer layers becomes progressively larger, to substantially fill the radial air gap. The surrounding slotless core is made from a spirally wound flux conductor, which may be a flat ribbon of rectangular cross section.
