Flame-retardant polymeric compositions, preferably thermoplastic and especially polyolefin-based compositions, containing an intumescent flame-retardant system substantially comprised of a phosphorus component and an organic nitrogen component. The flame-retardant system is more particularly comprised of ammonium polyphosphate and tris-(2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate.

Flame retardant polymeric compositions

An improved flame retardant polyolefin is disclosed which comprises a combination of ammonium polyphosphate; tris(2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate; and melamine cyanurate; and a selected silica in an amount from 0.5 percent to an amount equal to one-half the amount by weight of THEIC, wherein the selected silica meets defined surface area, particle size and absorption criteria.

Three-component intumescent flame retardant

An improved flame reardant polyolefin is disclosed which comprises a combination of ammoniumm polyphosphate; tris(2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate; and a selected silica in an amount from 0.5 percent to an amount equal to one-half the amount by weight of THEIC, wherein the silica meets defined surface arera, particle size and absorption criteria.
