A composition is provided to comprise a non-aqueous medium and a 3,4-oxypyridinone compound of structure (I): with each A being oxygen and/or sulfur, and with a variety of substituents at R-Rto enable a solution or an at least semi-stable emulsion to be formed in the non-aqueous medium. Methods of use are included herein, which may be focused on situations where the composition can be used as a lubricant and/or coolant.

A polymer comprising units having the structure (I): wherein x is 2 or 3, wherein L is (CH), where y is an integer from 1 to 10, or wherein L is CH(CH)CHS(CH), where z is an integer from 1 to 5; wherein [Q] is absent or is a polymerised moiety consisting of units having the structure (II): wherein R is a hydrocarbyl group, or a hydrocarbyl group containing one or more heteroatoms, wherein R may be linear, branched or cyclic, saturated or unsaturated, and wherein R has from 1 to 30 carbon atoms; wherein [Q] either consists of identical units of structure (II), or wherein [Q] consists of more than one different units of structure (II), differing in group R; and wherein X is a halogen or another chain terminating group. The polymers may find use as additives in lubricating compositions where they provide friction improvement and wear reduction.

Polymers and lubricating compositions containing polymers

A lubricating composition comprises at least 50 percent by mass, based on the mass of the composition of an oil of lubricating viscosity and 0.01 to 25 percent by mass, based on the mass of the composition of an oil-soluble poly(2-oxazine) polymer. The polymer has the repeat unit: where the number (n) of repeat units is an integer between 4 and 500, such as between 4 and 400. The polymer carries an inorganic or organic nucleophilic polymerisation terminating group (t), and an initiator group (i) connected to the N atom of a repeat unit, the initiator group (i) being effective to initiate the polymerisation of linear, branched or cyclic hydrocarbyl moieties. Rcomprises a single or a mixture of linear, branched or cyclic hydrocarbyl groups having 1-50 carbon atoms, some or all having 12-50 carbon atoms, or of at least one macro-monomeric hydrocarbyl group with more than 50 carbon atoms.

Lubricating oil additives

A method of making a polymer having the structure (I): wherein L is a linking group, R is a hydrocarbon group or a substituted-hydrocarbon group, and x is 2 or more, preferably from 2 to 100, more preferably from 2 to 50; and wherein each {Q} is an identical polymer block or contains a plurality of polymer blocks. The method comprises reacting a di-halo initiator with a selected monomer one or more times and then reacting the resulting moiety with a dithiol compound of the structure HS&#x2014;R&#x2014;SH.

Method of making polymers

A polymer having the structure (I): L is a linking group, R is a hydrocarbon group or a substituted-hydrocarbon group, and x is 2 or more, preferably from 2 to 100, more preferably from 2 to 50. Each {Q} is (a) an identical polymer block composed of 3 or more monomer units, or (b) contains a plurality of polymer blocks, each polymer block being composed of 3 or more monomer units, such that the moiety {Q}-L-{Q} has the structure {P. . . PP}-L-{PP. . . P} where each Pis an individual polymer block, the number of polymer blocks n in each {Q} being the same; wherein for each value of n the polymer blocks are identical; and wherein n is an integer of 2 or more, preferably from 2 to 100, more preferably from 2 to 50.

A lubricating composition comprises a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity and 0.01 to 25 percent by mass, based on the mass of the composition of an oil-soluble copolymer. The copolymer comprises units (a) and units (b):&#x2014;N(COR)CHCH&#x2014;&#x2003;&#x2003;(a)&#x2014;N(COR)CHCHCH&#x2014;&#x2003;&#x2003;(b)wherein the polymer carries an inorganic or organic nucleophilic polymerisation terminating group (t), and an initiator group (i) connected to the N atom of a repeat unit (a) or (b), the initiator group (i) being effective to initiate the polymerisation of linear, branched or cyclic hydrocarbyl moieties.
