A surgical instrument includes a shaft assembly and an articulation control assembly. The shaft assembly includes an articulation section that is configured to deflect a distal end portion from the longitudinal axis. The articulation control assembly includes an articulation control member and a transmission assembly. The articulation control member is rotatably mounted relative to the shaft assembly. The transmission assembly is operatively connected between the articulation control member and the articulation section of the shaft assembly. The transmission assembly is configured to transmit selective manipulation of the articulation control member to the articulation section and selectively actuate the articulation section. The articulation control assembly is configured to lock without selective manipulation of the articulation control member to thereby inhibit actuation of the articulation section and unlock with selective manipulation of the articulation control member to thereby actuate the articulation section.

The articulation drive assembly comprises an actuator. The actuator is movable relative to the body assembly to drive articulation of the articulation section. The locking feature is in communication with the actuator. The locking feature is movable between an unlocked state and a locked state. The locking feature is configured to permit movement of the actuator relative to the body assembly in the unlocked state. The locking feature is configured to prevent movement of the actuator relative to the body assembly in the locked state.

The method comprises the steps of generating a first image of the surgical site based on structured electromagnetic radiation emitted from the imaging system, receiving a second image of the surgical site, aligning the first image and the second image, generating a three-dimensional representation of the surgical site based on the first image and the second image as aligned, displaying the three-dimensional representation on a display screen, receiving a user selection to manipulate the three-dimensional representation, and updating the three-dimensional representation as displayed on the display screen from a first state to a second state according to the received user selection.

A surgical system comprising a surgical hub, a surgical instrument, a generator configured to energize an end effector; and a smoke evacuation system configured to remove smoke from a surgical site is disclosed. A display is configured to display a digital representation of the critical structure on the display. The display is configured to display a resection margin around the critical structure. The resection margin is generated based on the margin signal.

Method of using imaging devices in surgery

A surgical hub for use with a surgical system in a surgical procedure performed in an operating room is disclosed. The surgical hub comprises a control circuit configured to generate a first image of a surgical site from a real-time imaging source, receive a second image of the surgical site from a non-real-time image source, align the first image and the second image, generate a representation of the surgical site based on the first image and the second image as aligned, display the representation on a display screen, receive a first user selection to overlay hidden structures on the representation, receive a second user selection to manipulate the representation, and adjust the representation based on the second user selection.

A surgical instrument includes a rotatable electrical coupling assembly having a first part and a second part that electrically couple and rotate relative to each other. The second part is carried by and rotates with a tube collar coupled to a transducer. A portion of the transducer is inserted through an aperture of the second part, but does not contact the second part. The first part of the assembly may electrically couple to the second part via pogo pins, brush contacts, or ball bearings. Alternatively, the first part may comprise conductive channels formed in the casing. The second part may comprise a rotatable drum with a conductive trace. In some versions, one or more components may comprise MID components. In another version, the rotatable electrical coupling assembly comprises a rotatable PC board and brush contact. Further still, a circuit board may be provided with the transducer inside a transducer casing.

A surgical visualization system that can include a structured light emitter, a spectral light emitter, an image sensor, and a control circuit is disclosed herein. The structured light emitter can emit a structured pattern of electromagnetic radiation onto an anatomical structure. The spectral light emitter can emit electromagnetic radiation including a plurality of wavelengths. At least one of the wavelengths can penetrate a portion of the anatomical structure and reflect off a subject tissue. The image sensor can detect the structured pattern of electromagnetic radiation reflected off the anatomical structure and the at least one wavelength reflected off the subject tissue. The control circuit can receive signals from the image sensor, construct a model of the anatomical structure, detect a location of the subject tissue, and determine a margin about the subject tissue, based on at least one signal received from the image sensor.

System and method for determining, adjusting, and managing resection margin about a subject tissue

A surgical system is disclosed comprising a firing member, a motor configured to advance the firing member, a current sensor, and a control system configured to set a target firing speed range of the firing member based on a current draw of the motor sensed by the current sensor, set a threshold current draw range corresponding to the target firing speed range of the firing member, advance the firing member at a firing speed within the target firing speed range, monitor a current draw of the motor as the firing member is driven, compare the monitored current draw to the threshold current draw range, and adjust the firing speed of the firing member based on the monitored current draw crossing below a first non-zero current value corresponding to the threshold current draw range or above a second non-zero current value corresponding to the threshold current draw range.
