A control system for an internal combustion engine structured to operate using at least a first fuel includes at least one sensor configured to sense a condition within at least one cylinder of the internal combustion engine, and a controller operably connected to the at least one sensor. The controller is configured to receive at least one fueling request corresponding to at least the first fuel, send at least one fueling command to at least one injector within the internal combustion engine system corresponding to the at least one fueling request, receive at least one signal from the at least one sensor corresponding to the condition, estimate an actual fueling amount within the internal combustion engine based on the at least one signal, and determine at least one compensation amount corresponding to the at least one injector based on the actual fueling amount.

An apparatus for a combustion cylinder of a reciprocating piston engine includes a combustion cylinder end face component including a first side configured to face the combustion cylinder and extending in a radial direction of the combustion cylinder and a pocket recessed into the first side and including a recessed pocket surface. The combustion cylinder end face component may be one of a piston and a cylinder head. A thermal barrier coating is inlaid in the pocket. The thermal barrier coating includes a ceramic-metallic layer directly coating the recessed pocket surface and a ceramic layer directly coating the ceramic-metallic layer and including an outer surface facing the combustion cylinder.

A cylinder head includes novel designs for undercuts, contours of the outer enclosure, coolant jackets, and other cavities within an outer enclosure of the cylinder head. The cylinder head design enables the reduction of weight of the head while maintaining structural integrity of the head, and improves control of temperatures in intake side and exhaust side zones of the heads to improve operational efficiency of the engine. A method is provided for additive manufacturing of the cylinder head including the disclosed designs.

Heating of the charge air in an intake is provided by a working fluid that is circulated through the intake to exchange heat with the charge air. The heated charge air can be used in response to a thermal management condition for an exhaust gas produced by operation of the internal combustion engine.

An intake air circuit is structured to transmit intake air from a turbocharger compressor to an intake manifold of an engine. A charge air cooler ('CAC'), a bypass line, and a bypass heater are each positioned along the intake air circuit in parallel with each other. A first control valve is structured to controllably divert the intake air around the CAC. A second control valve is structured to controllably divert the intake air around at least one of the bypass line and the bypass heater. A controller operatively coupled to each of the engine, and the first and second control valves is structured to control each of the first and second control valves to cause the intake air to flow along a determined desired flow path based on each of measured ambient temperature and measured engine load.

An intake manifold is provided. A first inlet is structured to receive pressurized intake air from a turbocharger. A second inlet is structured to receive exhaust gas recirculation gas from an exhaust gas recirculation system. A third inlet is structured to receive fuel from a fuel line. A plurality of outlets are structured to be fluidly coupled to an engine. An intake manifold passage extends between each of the first, second, and third inlets, and the plurality of outlets. The intake manifold passage is shaped so as to cause at least two reversals in flow direction of each of the intake air, the exhaust gas recirculation gas, and the fuel through the intake manifold passage so as to improve mixing of each of the intake air, the exhaust gas recirculation gas, and the fuel.

An exhaust manifold comprises a plurality of exhaust intake conduits structured to be fluidly coupled to an engine and receive exhaust gas from a corresponding cylinder of the engine. At least one exhaust intake conduit provides a reduction in an exhaust intake conduit cross-sectional area from an inlet to an outlet. A plurality of bends are each defined by a respective one of the exhaust intake conduit outlets. An exhaust intake manifold is fluidly coupled to the exhaust intake manifold and defines an exhaust intake manifold flow axis. Each of the plurality of bends is shaped so as to define n angle of approach of exhaust gas flowing therethrough. A first angle of approach of the first bend relative to the exhaust intake manifold flow axis is smaller than a second angle of approach of an inner second bend.

A system and method for condensation management in a low-pressure loop EGR system are provided. The system includes an EGR condensation temperature module configured to determine an EGR condensation temperature of recirculated exhaust gas upstream of an EGR cooler and an EGR coolant temperature controller communicably coupled to the EGR condensation temperature module. The EGR coolant temperature controller provides EGR coolant to the EGR cooler at or above the EGR condensation temperature. The system also includes a charge air condensation temperature module configured to determine a charge air condensation temperature of charge air upstream of a charge air cooler and a charge air coolant temperature controller communicably coupled to the charge air condensation temperature module. The charge air coolant temperature controller provides charge air coolant to the charge air cooler at or above the charge air condensation temperature.

System and method for managing condensation in EGR systems

An apparatus for dithering fuel into an internal combustion engine includes a turbine that is powered by the internal combustion engine and a first fuel injector that injects a first fuel into an air stream to create a fuel/air stream. The apparatus also includes an air/fuel compressor that provides a compressed fuel/air stream to the internal combustion engine. The air/fuel compressor is powered by the turbine, and the air/fuel compressor compresses the fuel/air stream to create the compressed fuel/air stream. Additionally, the apparatus includes a second fuel injector that injects a second fuel into the compressed fuel/air stream prior to the compressed fuel/air stream entering the engine and after the compressed fuel/air stream exits the air/fuel compressor.

The engine system also includes an air intake in air providing communication with the internal combustion engine. Further, the engine system includes an exhaust system in exhaust gas receiving communication with the internal combustion engine. The exhaust system includes a methane oxidation catalyst through which at least a portion of the exhaust gas flows and an exhaust gas recirculation line in exhaust gas providing communication with the air intake.

An apparatus is disclosed including a first end defining an inner passage along a first inner surface of the first end, where the inner passage has threads structured to receive a spark plug. The apparatus further includes a second end opposite the first end and extending into a combustion chamber of a cylinder, the second end defining a pre-combustion chamber along a second inner surface and threads on an outer surface structured to thread into a spark plug hole in a cylinder head, which may be an enlarged spark plug hole. The second end includes holes that fluidly couple the pre-combustion chamber of the second end with the combustion chamber of the cylinder.
