Emulsions and latexes containing polymer particles with a diameter greater than 0.02 micron are prepared by (i) forming a microemulsion containing particles of oligomers with a diameter less than 0.02 micron by combining water, a surfactant, a hydride functional organosilicon oligomer or a mixture of such oligomers, and an alkenyl functional organosilicon oligomer or a mixture of such oligomers; (ii) adding a catalyst to the microemulsion; (iii) initiating polymerization of the oligomers; and (iv) continuing polymerization until an emulsion or latex is formed containing polymer particles with a diameter greater than 0.02 micron.

An emulsion containing particles of an organopolysiloxane is prepared by (i) combining a silanol endblocked siloxane, an alkyltrialkoxysilane, water, and a nonionic surfactant or an anionic surfactant; (ii) emulsifying these ingredients by agitating these ingredients or by using a high shear device; (iii) adding a condensation specific acid catalyst to the emulsion; (iv) polymerizing the catalyzed emulsion to form an organopolysiloxane polymer; and (v) continuing polymerizing step (iv) until the resulting organosiloxane polymer has the desired viscosity. Organosiloxane polymers exhibiting improved release properties can be obtained by using alkyltrialkoxysilanes R&prime;Si(OR&Prime;),where R&prime; and R&Prime; each represent alkyl groups, and R&prime; contains at least eight, preferably at least twelve, and most preferably at least sixteen or more carbon atoms.

Emulsions containing silicone polymers

An organofunctional cocyclic siloxane, i.e., a dialkyl, alkyl aminoalkyl cocyclic siloxane, is used to prepare copolymeric siloxane fluids, copolymeric siloxane gums, and terpolymeric siloxanes via three polymerization techniques. In one embodiment, the dialkyl, alkyl aminoalkyl cocyclic siloxane is polymerized using a bulk polymerization technique. In another embodiment, the dialkyl, alkyl aminoalkyl cocyclic siloxane is polymerized using an emulsion polymerization technique. In an additional embodiment, the dialkyl, alkyl aminoalkyl cocyclic siloxane is polymerized using a microemulsion polymerization technique. The dialkyl, alkyl aminoalkyl cocyclic siloxane most preferred is a dimethyl, methyl aminoalkyl cocyclic siloxane.

Organofunctional cocyclic siloxanes and polymerization thereof

This invention relates to the use of aminofunctional silicone microemulsions to make optically clear compositions. More particularly this invention is directed to optically clear shampoo compositions comprising (A) an aminofunctional silicone microemulsion having an average particle size of less than 0.06 microns, (B) at least one anionic detersive surfactant, (C) at least one foam boosting agent, (D) at least one pH adjusting agent, (E) at least one thickening agent, and (F) water. The optically clear silicone compositions of this invention are useful in the hair care industry, especially as shampoos.

Optically clear shampoo compositions containing aminofunctional silicone

This invention relates to the use of aminofunctional silicone microemulsions to make optically clear hair conditioning compositions. More particularly this invention is directed to optically clear hair conditioning compositions comprising an aminofunctional microemulsion, at least one long-chain quaternary amine salt, and water. The optically clear silicone compositions of this invention are useful in the hair care industry, especially as hair conditioners.

New compositions of matter are organofunctional cocyclic siloxanes of the formula ##STR1## where R1 to R3 are alkyl groups of 1-6 carbon atoms; a and b have a value of 1-10; and R4 is an aminoalkyl group or a carboxyalkyl group. Some representative R4 groups are --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 NH.sub.2, --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 NHCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 NH.sub.2, --CH.sub.2 CH(CH.sub.3)CH.sub.2 NHCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 NH.sub.2, and --(CH.sub.2).sub.10 COOH.

Organofunctional cocyclic siloxanes

A classical method of microemulsion formation involves mixing an oil and water with a surfactant (S1), and a co-surfactant (S2). The oil is mostly preferably a cyclic siloxane. The oil is added to a solution of the surfactant (S1) and water. A two-phase system containing the siloxane results. The two-phase system is then titrated with co-surfactant (S2) until a clear isotropic microemulsion results. An emulsion polymerization catalyst is added to the clear isotropic microemulsion, and polymerization of the cyclic siloxane is initiated. The polimerization is allowed to advance until the reaction is complete, or desired degree of polymerization (DP) has been obtained. Microemulsions of high molecular weight silicone polymers with low polydispersity can be produced.

Method of preparing silicone oil-in-water microemulsions

The cosmetic composition contains a conditioning agent and the improvement resides in the conditioning agent being a mixture of (i) a silicone polyether and (ii) an amine functional siloxane polymer. The use of acrylic functional siloxanes in hair treatment is disclosed. Acrylic functional siloxanes can be used as oxidizing agents in perms or formulated into hair care products such as shampoos or conditioners. They may be cured into/onto the hair using catalysts or radiation.

A hair treating method for imparting curl retention to hair in which at least one film forming ingredient is applied to the hair. The improvement utilizes as the film forming ingredient an organosilicon compound which is a nonpolar silsesquioxane.
