An apheresis system is disclosed which may include a separation chamber; a suspension flow path which communicates at one end with the separation chamber and includes a connector at the other end for connecting to a source of cellular suspension; an anticoagulant flow path which communicates at one end with the suspension flow path and includes a connector at the other end for connecting to an anticoagulant source; and a return flow path which communicates at one end with the separation chamber and communicates at the other end with a connector for connection directly to the suspension source or to the suspension flow path for returning one or more suspension components to the source. The anticoagulant flow path includes a flow restriction, such as an internal flow restriction, which limits the free flow of anticoagulants into the suspension flow path while preferably not completely stopping the flow of anticoagulant. The restriction may take various forms, but the preferred construction comprises a tubing segment of reduced inside diameter, providing resistance to the free flow of anticoagulant in the event of operator error or mechanical failure.

Apheresis system with anticoagulant flow control

An apparatus for irradiating materials is disclosed. The apparatus includes a housing defining a chamber and a pair of light sources positioned on opposite sides of the chamber. The housing includes a pair of housing sections moveable in hinged relation between open and closed positions. A manually removable tray within the housing to define a support suface for a flexible container in the chamber is also provided.

Apparatus for irradiation of blood products

A container for irradiation comprises a flexible, flat collapsible wall defining a sealed chamber, the plastic material of said wall being substantially transparent to the irradiation, which is typically ultraviolet radiation. An access port or ports are provided for communicating through the wall to the chamber. A flap is provided, integral with the wall and spaced from the chamber. The flap carries identifying indicia including a typically bar code indicia, so that the wall which defines the chamber may be at least substantially free of opaque indicia. Also, means may be provided for detecting an indicating exposure of the container to such irradiation, such as ultraviolet sensitive tape adhering to the flap. Alignment holes may be provided, typically in the flap, to facilitate the orientation of the container with apparatus for irradiation and apparatus for bar code reading, making use of alignment pins carried by such apparatus. The irradiating apparatus may be of hinged section type, which carries a manually removable tray to define a support surface for a flexible container within the apparatus. The support surface is made of an ultraviolet-transmissive material such as quartz.

Container for irradiation of blood products

A process is provided for detecting if a temperature sensor (18) is correctly located in a heating conduit at a point that is remote from the heater (28). Power is applied to the heater (28) in a predetermined manner. The change in the temperature sensed by the temperature sensor (18) is observed. If the temperature sensed by the temperature sensor (18) has changed in a certain manner, a signal is provided indicating that the temperature sensor (18) is located correctly. If, during observation, the temperature sensed has not changed in the certain manner, an alarm signal is provided.

Safety system for heating conduit

A humidifier for gases, for example for medical administration, may be adapted for insertion into a well of a heater for warming liquid in the humidifier. A seamless metal can defines a cylindrical wall and a closed bottom end, containing wick means for absorbing water and presenting it in dispersed form to gases flowing through the can. Transparent probe means extend into the can and serve as a liquid level control for preferably automatically controlling the liquid level in the can to be maintained in the lower one third of the can.
