A heavy duty, enzyme-containing, aqueous liquid detergent. The detergent includes surfactants, enzymes and an enzyme-stabilizing system. The detergent has a neat liquid pH of 9.5 or greater, a solution pH or 8.5 or greater at 0.2% weight use level and a titratable alkalinity of at least 0.5% weight per gram of product when expressed as % Na.sub.2 O as measured to pH 7.

A concentrated fabric softener having a dual cationic high active system, a sufficient level of fluorescent dye to whiten cotton garments, and a non-ionizing base. The dual active system is included at levels of greater than about 10% and preferably comprises a difatty amido ammonium methyl sulfate and a ditallow dimethyl ammonium chloride in a ratio of at least 1.5:1. Use of the concentrated softener results in reduced container size and greater manufacturing efficiencies. Inclusion of fluorescent dye restores whiteness/brightness to cotton garments yellowed by age.

The invention provides a composition and method wherein fluorescent whitening agents are satisfactorily dispersed in fabric softening compositions and viscosity stability of the composition is achieved. The fabric softening and whitening composition comprises: (i) from about 0.5% to about 10% of a cationic surfactant; (ii) from about 0.001% to about 0.3% of a stilbene sulfonic acid fluorescent whitening agent; (iii) from about 0.001% to about 0.5% of a non-ionizable base; and (iv) deionized water. The method for preparing the fabric softening system comprises forming an organic premix of fabric softening cationic surfactant, stilbene sulfonic acid fluorescent whitening agent and non-ionizable base. The organic premix is then added to deionized water containing other fabric softening adjuncts including an acidic pH adjusting agent to obtain pH of 3-6, the combination being stirred to uniformly disperse all components.

An alkaline composition and method of cleaning aluminum surfaces is disclosed which avoids discoloring or tarnishing of the metal surface. The composition comprises a mixture of alkali metal metasilicate and a compound chosen from the group consisting of sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate, lithium carbonate, potassium orthophosphate and sodium orthophosphate and mixtures thereof, wherein the metasilicate salt is present in an effective amount up to about 3% by weight of the composition and wherein the pH ranges above about 12.0.
