The present disclosure describes systems and methods associated with selective powering of an electronic display in response to operating conditions, additional data, and/or predicting that the electronic display is not going to be viewed or visible. By selectively enabling the electronic display between power states based on a prediction of when a viewer is expected to view the electronic display, a perceivably always-on electronic display may be provided without the electronic display being always-on, thereby balancing consumer interests with technical requirements of a relatively long battery life and correspondingly low power consumption.

Predictive display power control systems and methods

The present disclosure describes systems and methods associated with selective powering of an electronic display in response to sensed data indicating that the electronic display is not visible. By selectively enabling the electronic display between power states based on whether the electronic display is visible, a perceivably always-on electronic display may be provided without the electronic display being always-on, thereby balancing consumer interests with technical requirements of a relatively long battery life and correspondingly low power consumption.

Sensor-based display power control systems and methods

To reduce overall power consumption for an electronic display power management integrated circuit (PMIC), one of multiple electric power converters and/or electric power regulators may be selected based on an electrical load (e.g., due to the total brightness of the content displayed) on the electronic display at a given moment. In some embodiments, the PMIC may include a less efficient heavy load converter designed with high-current handling capability and a more efficient light load (e.g., low current) converter with lower current handling capability. A controller may dynamically select between the converters depending on a present load or an expected load on the electronic display.

Content-aware dynamic power converter switching for power optimization

Aspects of the subject technology relate to electronic devices with input devices. An input device may include a button or a key of a keyboard that uses a light sensor to detect key press events. The light sensor may detect changes in an amount of received light caused by actuation of a keycap of the button or key. The button or key may include an opaque structure that blocks a portion of the light when the key is compressed. The button or key may include a light source such as a light-emitting diode that generates light. A portion of the light from the light source may illuminate the key or button to provide backlight for the key and another portion may be received by the light sensor for detecting partial or complete compression of the button or key.
