Various embodiments are described to enable multiple, independent communication networks to share in an autonomous and dynamic manner unlicensed wireless resources. Generally, this involves determining that a first network node () is using at least a portion of a wireless resource to provide network service to at least one remote unit (). A second network node (), under the control of a different network operator than the first node and desiring to use the wireless resource, sends the first network node, a request to relinquish use of at least a portion of the wireless resource. The second network node sends this request wirelessly, perhaps using the wireless resource itself. If the first network node grants the request, the second node may then begin using at least a portion of the relinquished resource to provide network service.

Dynamic sharing of wireless resources among different communication networks

A system, method and computer readable medium for scroll displaying of message information stored in message memory () of a wireless messaging device (). The wireless messaging device () fetches additional message information from a wireless messaging server () over a wireless network, and stores in message memory () the additional message information received over the wireless network prior to reaching the end of scroll displaying the stored message information. Additionally, a plurality of received messages can be scroll displayed according to a message receive order or other priority.

A communication system (100) that includes a plurality of communication units (101-108) and infrastructure equipment (110-115, 140, 141) employs a method and apparatus for providing communication services to a communication unit (e.g., 101). The infrastructure equipment includes a plurality of base sites (110-115) that provide communication services to corresponding service coverage areas (120-125). The service coverage areas (120-125) are further arranged into paging location areas (130-132). When the communication unit (101) becomes active in the system (100), the communication unit (101) determines its registration type. When the communication unit (101) is of a first registration type, the communication unit (101) transmits a registration message to the infrastructure equipment (e.g., 141) whenever the unit (101) enters a new location area (130-132). When the communication unit (101) is of a second registration type, the communication unit (101) transmits the registration message to the infrastructure equipment (141) whenever the unit (101) enters a new service coverage area (120-125). Thus, when the infrastructure equipment (141) receives a communication destined for the communication unit (101), the infrastructure equipment (141) conveys the communication to the communication unit (101) based on the unit's registration type. However when the communication unit is of a first registration type corresponding to the first registration process, in which the infrastructure pages the communication unit prior to conveying a communication to the unit, and the location area containing the communication unit consists of a 'single service coverage area' communication is conveyed directly to the communication unit without first paging the unit.

A dispatch radio communication system (100) that includes a dispatch processor (101) and a voice mail system (103) employs a method and apparatus for providing voice mail service in the dispatch system. The dispatch processor receives a request to communicate from a first communication unit (109), wherein the request includes a dispatch identification (ID) of a second communication unit (110) that is a target of a communication from the first communication unit. The dispatch processor then determines whether the second communication unit can participate in the communication. When the second communication unit cannot participate, the dispatch processor establishes a communication path (122, 126) between the first communication unit and a third communication unit (111) that is coupled to the voice mail system to allow a user of the first communication unit to provide a voice mail message to the voice mail system for a user of the second communication unit.

An improved communication system is disclosed wherein at least one reprogramming station is added to a communication system. The reprogramming station is constructed and arranged to communicate with the subscriber units thereby either reprogramming or regrouping them. The subscribing units receive the reprogramming command and acknowledge individually, altering a memory means until either reprogrammed back to the original state, or to another state. In another mode, the reprogramming station transmits a regrouping command wherein two or more groups are combined to form a super group.

A digital encoding and decoding system suited for use in a mobile trunked dispatch communication system capable of error correction, error detection, and detection of loss of synchronization. The encoder comprises a cyclic block encoder, an autosynchronization sequence combiner, a convolutional encoder, and a bit interleaver to encode information to be transmitted. The decoder comprises a bit de-interleaver, a convolutional decoder, an autosynchronization sequence combiner, and a cyclical block decoder to recover the transmitted information and also indicates whether any errors are present in the recovered information.

Digital encoder-decoder

The instant invention resides in a system, including an encoder and a decoder, for the transmission and retrieval of digital data over a transmission medium. The encoder includes an error correction encoding scheme which processes the data and produces an encoded bit stream including data and parity bits in either an interspersed or blocked relationship. A transmission bit stream is generated by modulo-2 adding the encoded bit stream with a predetermined sync sequence, which sync sequence is selected to provide optimum sync detection at the decoder site. The encoder modulo-2 subtracts said sync sequence from the received transmission stream, thereby producing a resultant which is monitored by an error correction detector. The detector produces an in- or out-of-synchronization indication as determined by the number of resultant bit stream detected errors.

Synchronizing technique for an error correcting digital transmission

Binary logic is added to the binary logic normally utilized for the purpose of generating and decoding binary code combinations which reflect the order of use of a number of units, utilized in sequence, to thereby indicate the unit least recently used (LRU). Disclosed is the utilization of six binary bits which are updated in accordance with a sequence of use of four units to thereby indicate the least recently used one of the four units. In accordance with known LRU techniques, there are 24 valid binary bit combinations that reflect the sequence of use of the four units. The provision of 6 binary bits in the LRU code are capable of assuming 64 different permutations, therefore 40 combinations of binary bits are considered invalid when utilizing the LRU code. The present invention utilizes certain of the invalid binary bit combinations to identify units that have been removed from further use because of a fault condition, and which code continues to identify the sequence of use of those units which have not been eliminated from further use. The code chosen to identify a faulty unit and the sequence of use of the remaining units is fault tolerant in that additional errors in the coding mechanism can be tolerated, and ignored, while maintaining the ability to identify faulty units and sequence of use of the remaining units.
