A printing ink composition having a high degree of rub-off resistance comprising (a) a dispersion of a pigment in a vehicle containing a C.sub.7 -C.sub.40 oil and (b) a polymer latex emulsified in said dispersion. When employed for printing at high speeds, an anti-misting compound such as tridecyl acid phosphate, phosphoric acid, glycerol, or propylene carbonate is preferentially added to the ink composition. Where cost is not of paramount concern, a polytetrafluoroethylene wax is preferentially added to the ink composition.

Low rub printing ink

Gravure base inks are prepared by flushing an aqueous pigment with a hydrocarbon solvent solution of a major amount of calcium resinate or magnesium resinate and a minor amount of zinc resinate in the presence of a C.sub.8 -C.sub.24 fatty acid amine or C.sub.8 -C.sub.24 fatty acid quaternary ammonium salt. The solvent to metal ratio is at least 40:60 and the pH is in the range of 4 to 10.

A urethane modified resin is prepared by reacting a resin containing carboxyl groups with an amine-alcohol to form a resin-amine salt, followed by reacting the resin-amine salt with a polyisocyanate.

Dispersions of polymer particles in non-aqueous vehicles are prepared by transferring the finely-divided polymer particles directly from an aqueous latex containing about 5 percent to 60 percent by weight of the polymer particles into the non-aqueous vehicle. The resulting dispersions can be used in the production of lithographic inks.

Novel vehicles for printing inks are thermoplastic alcohol-soluble low molecular weight poly(amide-ester) resins that are prepared by a two-step process from a dimerized fatty acid, a polyamine, and a bisphenol A-epichlorohydrin epoxy resin.
