A technique communicates a password to a user. The technique involves receiving, by processing circuitry, a request for a password. The technique further involves generating, by the processing circuitry, a password in response to the request. The password includes a series of alphanumeric digits which contains at least one number and at least one letter. The technique further involves displaying, by the processing circuitry, the password on a display screen. Each number displayed on the display screen has a first visual characteristic, and each letter displayed on the display screen has a visual characteristic that is different from the first visual characteristic. Such a technique enables disambiguation of an alphanumeric security code to a user.

An improved technique involves identifying other transactions for investigation from entries in a database that involve a particular actor involved in a known fraudulent transaction. From a transaction log listing transactions, a server generates a database of transaction entries which identify transactions from the transaction log, each transaction entry (i) describing an activity and (ii) identifying a set of actors involved in that activity. Based on a known fraudulent transaction involving a particular actor, the server finds a set of transaction entries from the database which involve the particular actor. From the found set of transaction entries, the server identifies other transactions for investigation.

An improved technique involves generating an encoded representation of encrypted forms of a message which includes an institution's digital signature derived from the message. The institution sends the encoded representation to the user's computer. The user transfers an image of the encoded representation from the user's computer to a separate hand-held device. The user then derives the encrypted forms of the message and the institution's digital signature by decoding the image on the hand-held device; the user then decrypts the encrypted forms of the message and the institution's digital signature on the hand-held device. The user then sees the message without interference from an intrusive agent in a MitB attack. Further, the user can verify the institution's identity as the sender of the message by being able to validate the institution's digital signature. In this way, a MitB attack is very likely to be made apparent to the user.
