Robotic surgery systems include a floor supported surgical robot with offset links. A robotic surgery system includes a surgical robot and a control system. The surgical robot includes a manipulator and a floor/pedestal mount. The manipulator includes a mounting base, a yaw joint, an offset extension link, a parallelogram linkage assembly, and an instrument holder. The floor/pedestal mount is configured for supporting the mounting base in a fixed position and orientation relative to a patient and includes set-up joints operable to reposition and reorient the mounting base to reposition a remote center of manipulation relative to the patient prior to conducting surgery on the patient via the manipulator. The manipulator includes offset links. The control system is configured to electronically communicate with and control operation of the manipulator to articulate a surgical instrument during surgery.

Redundant axis and degree of freedom for hardware-constrained remote center robotic manipulator

A surgical system includes a manipulator, a surgical tool and a control system. The manipulator includes a manipulator mounting base, a pitch mechanism, a roll mechanism and a redundant rotation mechanism. The surgical tool is supported by the manipulator and has a tool shaft axis. The pitch mechanism rotates the surgical tool around a pitch axis. The roll mechanism rotates the surgical tool around a roll axis transverse to the pitch axis. The redundant rotation mechanism rotates the surgical tool around a redundant rotation axis. Each of the tool shaft axis, the pitch axis and the roll axis intersect at a remote center. The control system is configured to electronically communicate with and control operation of the manipulator to articulate the surgical tool during surgery.

Techniques for controlling an end effector include a first engagement member coupled to a first actuator, a second engagement member coupled to a second actuator; and a control unit. The control unit is configured to engage the first engagement member with a third engagement member of an instrument, where movement of the third engagement member causes a movement of a degree of freedom (DOF) of an end effector in a first direction; engage the second engagement member with a fourth engagement member of the instrument, where movement of the fourth engagement member causes a movement of the DOF in a second direction opposite the first direction; actuate the DOF in the first direction to a first detectable position; actuate the DOF in the second direction to a second detectable position; and actuate the DOF to a third position between the first and second detectable positions.

Systems and methods for control of end effectors

A surgical manipulator linkage assembly may comprise a linkage arm that includes a first pulley and a second pulley. Each of the first pulley and the second pulley comprise a first drive track and a second drive track. The first drive track and the second drive track are substantially co-planar, and the first drive track extends at least partially around the second drive track. The linkage arm also includes a first drive member section extending between the first drive tracks of the first pulley and the second pulley. The linkage arm also includes a second drive member section extending between the second drive tracks of the first pulley and the second pulley. The first drive member section is wound around the first pulley in a first tensile direction and the second drive member section is wound around the first pulley in a opposite second tensile direction.

Systems and methods for a compact remote center manipulator

A system is provided including a reclosable storage container comprising an interior sterile environment. The system also includes a sterile teleoperated component of a teleoperated surgical manipulator assembly in the interior sterile environment. A communications interface enables communication between a device outside the storage container and the component inside the storage container. A viewing window allows the stored component to be seen through the storage container. Multiple storage containers can be moved and stored. In an operating room, the storage container is opened, and the component is removed and assembled into the teleoperated surgical assembly.

Systems and methods for sterilization and storage of a sterilized teleoperated component

A robotic system includes first and second manipulator assemblies in an operating environment and having separately movable bases. A processing unit is configured to receive first sensor data from a first plurality of sensors disposed on the first manipulator assembly, wherein the first sensor data provide spatial information about the operating environment external to the first manipulator assembly. A first spatial relationship of the second manipulator assembly relative to the first manipulator assembly is determined using data including the first sensor data. A first alignment relationship between the first and second manipulator assemblies is established based on the first spatial relationship. Based on the first alignment relationship, motion of the second manipulator assembly is commanded in response to a command from a first input device operable by an operator.

Systems and methods for determining registration of robotic manipulators or associated tools and control

Systems and methods for automated docking include a linkage, a docking arm located near a distal end of the linkage, a docking support mechanism, and one or more processors. The one or more processors are configured to detect a docking port using the docking support mechanism and actuate the linkage based on the detection to align the docking arm with the docking port, move the docking arm toward the docking port, and dock the docking arm to the docking port. In some embodiments, to actuate the linkage based on the detection, the one or more processors are configured to align the docking arm with an alignment point of the docking port, align an alignment axis of the docking arm with an alignment axis of the docking port, rotationally align the docking arm with the docking port, and reduce a relative distance between the docking arm and the docking port.

System and method for automated docking

A system generally includes a surgical manipulator configured to control motion of a surgical tool, and a clamping apparatus having a mounting location configured to support the surgical manipulator and couple to a mounting structure. The clamping apparatus may include a body, a first jaw coupled to the body and configured to engage a first portion of the mounting structure, and a second jaw coupled to the body and configured to engage a second portion of the mounting structure. At least one of the first jaw and the second jaw may be movably coupled to the body and configured to move along a non-linear path to clamp mounting structures of different sizes. A lever may be pivotably coupled to the body and may be movable between a unclamped position and a clamped position. Alternatively, a motor may be operable to attach the clamping apparatus to the mounting structure.

Modular clamps for mounting surgical manipulators

A drape includes a first drape portion configured to receive a manipulator arm of a surgical system and a pocket coupled to a distal portion of the first drape portion. The pocket is configured to receive a manipulator of the surgical system. The pocket includes a flexible membrane positionable between an output of the manipulator and an input of a surgical instrument mountable to the manipulator. In some embodiments, the flexible membrane is located at a distal end of the pocket. In some embodiments, the flexible membrane is configured to allow an actuating force to be transmitted from the output of the manipulator to the input of the surgical instrument. In some embodiments, the pocket provides a sterile barrier between the manipulator and the surgical instrument. In some embodiments, the drape further includes a rotatable seal configured to couple a proximal opening of the pocket to the first drape portion.

A computer-assisted medical system includes robotic manipulators, a user input system operable to generate signals to control the manipulators, and a controller configured to execute instructions to perform operations. A portion of the user input system is movable relative to the plurality of manipulators. The operations include, in a pairing mode, associating a first manipulator of the plurality of manipulators with the portion of the user input system based on movement of the portion of the user input system relative to the first manipulator, and, in a following mode, controlling motion of the first manipulator in accordance with an indication generated by the user input system in response to operation of the portion of the user input system by a user.

A computer-assisted medical system includes manipulators, a user input system, a user output system comprising a display device, and a controller configured to execute instructions to perform operations. The operations include, in a pairing mode and in response to a first set of signals generated by the user input system, causing a virtual selector shown on the display device to move relative to an imagery shown on the display device. The operations further include, in the pairing mode, associating a first manipulator with a portion of the user input system based on movement of the virtual selector relative to a represented location of the first instrument, and, in a following mode, controlling motion of the first instrument in accordance to a second set of signals generated by the user input system in response to operation of the portion of the user input system by a user.

A medical system comprises an entry guide, a display, and a processor. The processor may be configured to receive state information for an articulatable image capture device controllably extendable out of a distal end of the entry guide. The processor may be configured to generate a view including a graphical representation of a distal end portion of the articulatable image capture device as determined from the received state information and a graphical representation of a field of view of the articulatable image capture device extending distally from the distal end portion of the articulatable image capture device. The processor may also cause the view to be displayed on the display.

An instrument holder generally includes a carriage rotatable with respect to a carriage support, a light pipe extending axially through the carriage, and an electrical conductor extending through the carriage radially outward of the light pipe. The light pipe can transmit light energy and the electrical conductor can transmit electricity between a proximal end portion and a distal end portion of the carriage to a medical instrument. The rotatable carriage may include a sterile adapter assembly positioned at the proximal and/or distal end portions of the rotatable carriage. The sterile adapter assembly may include a roll disk rotatable with respect to the outer frame, an inner disk rotatable with respect to the roll disk, and a light pipe to transmit light energy through the roll disk. The inner disk can transfer movement of an actuator between the rotatable carriage and the instrument.

A method of operating a manipulator arm comprising a manipulator interface configured to removably couple with and transmit actuation force to a medical instrument includes mounting a cannula to a cannula mount coupled to the manipulator arm; mounting a medical instrument to the manipulator interface; inserting a shaft of the medical instrument through an entry guide mounted to the cannula; rotating the manipulator interface and the medical instrument relative to the cannula mount; and rotating the entry guide relative to the cannula mount about a longitudinal axis of the cannula.

Systems and methods for minimally invasive computer-assisted telesurgery are described. A computer-assisted teleoperated surgery system includes a teleoperated instrument actuation pod. The surgical instrument actuation pod includes a plurality of linear actuators arranged around a surgical instrument. The linear actuators engage with actuator engagement members on the instrument and so drive movable parts on the instrument. The actuation pod is mounted on a teleoperated manipulator. Instrument pod mass is close to the teleoperated manipulator to minimize the pod's inertia, momentum, and gravity effects on the manipulator.
