A continuous sieving apparatus is described. The continuous sieving apparatus includes a sieve surface attached to a wall. A set of openings is formed in the sieve surface so as to define a set of pathways extending through the sieve surface. The set of opening are defined by a length dimension that is greater than a width dimension. An action system is configured to move the sieve surface in one or more directions (e.g., horizontally and vertically). Such movement causes a first pupa having a first cephalothorax width that is less than the width dimension to move through any one of the set of openings, and a second pupa having a second cephalothorax width that is greater than the width dimension to be prevented from moving through the set of openings.

Continuous sieving apparatuses for pupae separation

Devices, systems, and methods for transporting or transferring insect pupae in an aqueous solution are described. The system includes a tank containing a solution with insect pupae, a transfer chamber having an outlet at a bottom portion of the chamber, a solution inlet, an evacuation channel, and a depth measurement system. A tube fluidly connects to tank and the transfer chamber. An evacuation device connected to the evacuation channel removes air from the transfer chamber and generates a vacuum therein to draw the solution through the tube into the transfer chamber.

Pupae transfer device

A continuous sieving apparatus is described. The continuous sieving apparatus includes an inclined sieve surface attached to a wall. The inclined sieve surface is inclined with respect to a horizontal axis for pupae to continuously flow across down the incline. A set of openings is formed in the sieve surface so as to define a set of pathways extending through the sieve surface. The set of opening are defined by a length dimension that is greater than a width dimension. When the inclined sieve surface is submerged in a liquid, a first pupa having a first cephalothorax width that is less than the width dimension is free to move through any one of the set of openings, and a second pupa having a second cephalothorax width that is greater than the width dimension is prevented from moving through the set of openings.

Devices, systems, and methods for isolating an insect pupa from an aqueous solution including a plurality of insect pupae. An isolation device may include a primary channel through which the aqueous solution and insect pupae travel, an outlet, and a secondary channel that intersects the primary channel. The secondary channel may transport a fluid to add it to the primary channel between an inlet and the outlet. When the sealable outlet is closed, an insect pupa located downstream of the intersection of the primary and secondary channels remains stationary while any insect pupae upstream of the intersection are pushed towards the inlet. The systems and methods described herein may also provide for identifying and sorting insect pupae.
