The invention provides recombinant host organisms (e.g., plants) genetically modified with a polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) synthase system and one or more accessory proteins (e.g., PPTase and/or ACoAS) that allow for and/or improve the production of PUFAs in the host organism. The present invention also relates to methods of making and using such organisms (e.g., to obtain PUFAs) as well as products obtained from such organisms (e.g., oil and/or seed).

Production of DHA and other LC PUFAs in plants

Provided are methods and/or systems having advantages of cost effective, time saving, and informative user-friendly characteristics to accomplish trait introgression. The methods provided comprise determining presence of omega-3 fatty acids (for example docosahexaenoic acid or DHA; docosapentaenoic acid or DPA; Alpha linolenic acid or ALA; and eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA) using Fourier Transformed infra Red (FTIR) spectrum. The use of FTIR enables analysis of the oil contained in the seeds using a multivariate-based Mid-FTIR model. The methods and/or systems provided advantages of non-destructive analysis to provide information to facilitate trait introgression and other breeding applications.

Compositions and methods include genetically encoding and expressing a novel delta-9 desaturase in plant cells. In some embodiments, methods of expressing nucleic acids in a plant cell to take advantage of the delta-9 desaturase enzyme's activity, such that the percent composition of saturated fatty acids in plant seeds is decreased and there is a concomitant increase in &#x394;9 fatty acids. In other embodiments, amino acid sequences have delta-9 desaturase activity. Methods can involve expression of delta-9 desaturase in plant cells, plant materials, and whole plants for the purpose of increasing the amount of mono unsaturated fatty acids in whole plants, plant seeds, and plant materials, for example, seeds.

Generation of transgenic canola with low or no saturated fatty acids

This invention encompasses the identification and isolation genes and gene fragments that confer altered metabolic characteristics inplants, when expressed using GENEWARE&#x2122; viral vectors. These genes are derived from a variety of sources. Expression of these genes resulted in alterations of the levels of at least one of the following metabolites: acids, fatty acids, amino acids and related compounds, branched fatty acids, carbohydrates, hydrocarbons, alkaloids and other bases, esters, glycerides, phenols and related compounds, alcohols, alkenes and alkynes, sterols, oxygenated terpenes, and other isoprenoids, and ketones and quinones.
