When a user enters into a transaction to receive content, the DRM information associated with the user is used to protect the content before delivery to the user. A near field communication (NFC) based checkout system comprises an NFC enabled mobile telephone that reads product data from an NFC tag associated with a product. The mobile telephone updates a shopping list when the consumer scans an item. The consumer uploads the shopping list at a payment terminal at the checkout via an NFC link. The payment terminal connects with a price look up (PLU) database and downloads the price data for the items in the shopping list to provide a total price. The payment terminal requests authorization of the total price from the consumer's financial authorization.

A system and method of determining unprocessed items which is used to verify an item count based upon the number of radio frequency identification labels that have responded with their label information. The system includes an imaging system for producing image information about items in a container, and a computer for receiving label information from a radio frequency identification label reader following interrogation of a number of radio frequency identification labels on the items in the container, for producing a first count of the items from label information obtained from the number of radio frequency identification labels, for producing a second count of the items in the container from the image information, and for comparing the first count to the second count to produce a third count of the items not processed by the radio frequency identification label reader.

A method of managing time-sensitive items which relies on identification information of RFID labels associated with the items. The method includes the steps of identifying the time-sensitive item, and obtaining the expiration information from a web site of a seller of the time-sensitive item. In another form concerned with products, the method includes the steps of identifying an EPL associated with the product, causing the EPL to interrogate an RFID label on the product, receiving identification information from the RFID label, and obtaining the expiration information about the product using the identification information from the RFID label. The method additionally compares the expiration information with current date information and either causes the EPL to display a lower price or assists with removal of expired instances of a product through a report.

System and method of managing time-sensitive items

Systems and techniques for control of RFID devices. An RFID device has an antenna connected with a switch or switches whose states can be changed so as to disable or reduce the effective range of the antenna. The RFID device includes a transceiver that uses the antenna to carry on communications with an RFID reader. The transceiver can set the states of switches in order to set the reader to a desired state. The reader is capable of issuing commands to the RFID device, acted on by the transceiver in order to set states of switches in order to achieve a desired state for the RFID device. The reader may issue commands through RF communication, or alternatively may issue commands through a close proximity interface, for example through contacts or through an inductive connection, allowing the state of the device to be reset after the RF capability of the device has been disabled or reduced.

Methods and apparatus for disabling, enabling or setting the range of radio frequency identification devices

A method of identifying items for checkout that improves checkout speed. The method includes obtaining first item identification information from RFID labels on grouped first items, obtaining second item identification information from bar code labels on ungrouped second items, determining prices of the first and second items from the first and second item identification information, and processing payment for the first and second items.

Improved techniques for transmission and display of video data are described. A point of sale terminal includes a processor, memory and software executed by the processor to create frames of data and to analyze the frames of data to create differential data defining differences between preceding and succeeding frames of data. The differential data can be applied to the preceding frames to construct the succeeding frames. At least one frame is transmitted to an external video interface using an external connection such as a universal serial bus port. Differential data is also transmitted to the external video interface. The differential data is applied to the frame which has been transmitted in order to create succeeding frames. The frames of video data are displayed using a display connected to the video interface.
