A medical apparatus and a method of using the medical apparatus is disclosed. The method includes a step of providing the medical apparatus configured to perform an initial-state function and further configured to be altered to enable additional medical functions by using adaptor kits containing cartridges and at least one accessory. The initial-state function is one of an updating sequence, a medical diagnostic test, and a medical function. Additional steps include: using the medical apparatus to perform the initial-state function; and altering the medical apparatus to perform two new medical functions. Optional steps include choosing the initial state function, updating the firmware, enabling an ECG using two finger sensors or using multiple leads, providing one or more AED adaptor kits, a wAED adaptor kit, an ECG adaptor kit, and a training AED adaptor kit.

Medical apparatus and method of using the medical apparatus

A method of using a medical apparatus includes a step of providing the medical apparatus. The medical apparatus is hand-held and enables operation of an initial-medical function or initial-state function. The medical apparatus is capable of accepting and operationally integrating into the medical apparatus the contents of an adaptor kit to enable a new medical function. Each adaptor kit includes at least one adaptor-kit cartridge and at least one accessory. Added steps include: using the medical apparatus to perform the initial-medical function or initial-state function; providing a first, a second, and a third adaptor kit to enable the medical apparatus to function as: a wearable automated external defibrillator (AED) with disposable electrode pads; as a wAED with disposable electrode pads; and as a means for taking an electrocardiogram (ECG).

Method of using a medical device

A method to provide feedback, coaching, and ECG analysis during a cardiac event. A rescuer would typically be attempting cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and/or administering an electrical shock from a defibrillator and/or collecting electrocardiogram (ECG) data. The method includes a step of providing a data-generation device (e.g., a camera) and computing components. The computer is used to calculate distances on the fly using data generated by the data-generation device, such as a camera, that may be in motion. The method uses the computer to calculate movement of the chest of a patient and to assess outcomes. When CPR contaminates an ECG, the computer removes the unwanted contamination so that proper guidance to the rescuer can be delivered during CPR.

Method to provide computational analysis and feedback during a cardiac rescue

A method of using a medical device to take multiple electrocardiograms (ECG) and, if needed, to be converted into an automated external defibrillator (AED). The medical device is configured to take the ECG without deploying any AED electrode pad and, if convenient, to be held by a person so that the person can simply put fingers from both hands on two contacts to take the ECG. Alternatively, the two contacts may be placed on the person's bare skin. The medical device is configured to separate into two components: An AED body and a cartridge. A computer for viewing the ECG may be built into the medical device or may be connected to the medical device. Conversion of the medical device to an AED occurs by removing a first AED electrode pad and a second AED electrode pad from a flattened and stacked arrangement within the cartridge.

A compact AED with integrated CPR coaching has capability to provide coaching on cardiopulmonary resuscitation for a person in cardiac distress. The compact AED is also capable of delivering an electrical charge to the person. The AED is provided in a device body, which comes in two parts: a front-body housing and a user-separable cartridge, the latter holding disposable AED components. The front-body housing is placed on the chest of a person undergoing CPR. Use of the front-body housing enables the compact AED to coach the rescuer on CPR. One or more CPR sensors are part of the front-body housing. A circuit board within the front-body housing receives data from AED and CPR sensors and enables coaching of the rescuer.

Compact AED with integrated CPR coaching

A compact automated external defibrillator (AED) is a device configured to receive electrocardiogram signals while the AED's electrode pads are in airtight storage. A surface of the device has a first electrical connection and a second electrical connection to a circuit board, each at a separate defined location on the surface. The circuit board receives ECG signals from a patient when the first defined location and the second defined location on the surface of the device body are put in contact with the patient. The circuit board may be configured to sense ECG signals from the patient through a plurality of additional defined locations on the surface of the device.

Compact AED with external electrocardiogram

A re-usable, compact automated external defibrillator (AED) having a proximate electrode and a distal electrode for use in delivering an electrical charge to a person in cardiac distress. The components of the AED are packed together in a low-profile device body. The distal electrode may be easily unpacked from the device body and deployed. A circuit board within the device body controls the AED. The proximate electrode is part of the device body such that the device body is attached to the skin of the person when in use. The distal electrode is wired to the device body and also attached to the skin of the person when in use. The circuit board may be used to deliver a biphasic electrical charge to the person. The adhesive pads on the electrodes may be peeled off and replaced for reuse. Also, the electrodes may be replaced, if needed.

Compact AED with one distal electrode

A method to provide real-time feedback and coaching to augment cardiac rescue by a rescuer. The rescuer would typically be attempting cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or administering an electrical shock from a defibrillator. The method includes steps of providing a computer, a data-generation device, a cuing device, using the data-generation device, and activating the cuing device. Optional steps include: attaching an article to the rescuer, providing a stationary component, using the camera to provide data to the computer; recording data from the use of a defibrillator; and combining data from the use of a defibrillator and the data on a rate of cardio pulmonary resuscitation and depth of chest compression by the rescuer with video data from the camera to produce combined data, which will be available for after-action review.
