A method for planning an examination of an examination object by a tomosynthesis machine includes: Raw data of the examination object are acquired from defined acquisition angles. An auxiliary data set is reconstructed from the raw data. Depth data are calculated based on the auxiliary data set calculating a number of projections from the perspective of a respectively defined projection center from the auxiliary data set or from the raw data. Each of the projections has a number of image points each linked with associated depth data. The projections are displayed and at least one projection is chosen. A position of an examination region of the examination object is marked therein. A real three-dimensional position of the examination region is calculated using the marked position and its depth data, and an examination path to the examination region is calculated.

In a method and an apparatus to exam a tissue sample, a female breast is compressed in an x-ray imaging apparatus and a biopsy procedure is conducted to extract a tissue sample from the compressed breast, with the extraction taking place using images generated by the x-ray imaging system. While the breast is still compressed, the extracted tissue sample is transported to a region outside of the extraction location that is irradiated by x-rays from the x-ray source of the imaging apparatus, and is irradiated at that region by the x-ray source in order to generate 3D data from a radiation detector that are used to reconstruct a data set of slice images from common projections of the extraction region and the tissue sample. The reconstructed slice images are then displayed.

The mask reproduces the image region covered by the breast tissue. A region targeted for the biopsy, and located within the breast tissue, is marked in the mask. To generate a tomosynthetic 3D x-ray image composed of a number of slice images, a tomosynthetic 3D intermediate image composed of a number of slice images is reconstructed from 2D projection images that have not been noise-filtered. The microcalcium regions contained in these slice images are segmented, and one or more subject slice images relevant to these microcalcium voxels are determined for each microcalcium region. The microcalcium voxels belonging to the segmented microcalcium region in this subject slice image or in these subject slice images are projected forwards in the 2D projection images, and the microcalcium pixels associated with these microcalcium voxels are marked in the 2D projection images. Noise-filtered 2D projection images are subsequently generated by subjecting the microcalcium pixels of the 2D projection images to no noise filtering or a noise filtering that leads to a noise reduction reduced relative to the remaining image regions. The tomosynthetic 3D x-ray image is then calculated from the 2D projection images that have been noise-filtered in this manner.

After the reconstruction of the total volume for each voxel, variances are calculated in a prescribed region or radius R in order to determine contrast jumps and their spatial orientation with their tangential planes T. The image values in the tangential plane T are filtered with a two-dimensional convolution, and subsequently the original voxel data are mixed in weighted fashion with the filtered voxel data.
