One of the barriers to greater adoption of small turbines is their aerodynamic interference with each other, and hence the need to separate them. Certain types of vertical axis turbines, the drag types, can actually enhance each other's performance when placed close to each other under the right conditions.

Vertical axis turbine clustering

The location of in-pipe turbines within a piping system and their relationships to other devices in the piping system is dependent on several factors for the ideal operation of these turbines, whether from the nozzle shooting liquid into air, or providing a stable pressure to the turbine and the generator. Several solutions to this issue are presented.

Turbine relationships in pipes

A wind turbine, particularly vertical axis, whose diameter is extensible and retractable, either from the length of the arms or the angle of the blades, or both, has advantages in operating in low wind speed regimes and surviving in high wind speed, regimes. The current application describes how to construct such a turbine, particularly the control mechanisms and the optimal aerodynamic configurations of the blades.

Variable diameter and angle vertical axis turbine

An in-pipe turbine has uses in energy storage and circulation. Specific applications are in storage systems working by elevation, smart grid systems, pressure release, and heating/cooling systems. Storage and release of electrical energy are important parts of an electrical grid. A system for storage using particulates is presented. On a higher level, a water system can interact with an electrical grid in order to use and provide electricity and convey water in a more efficient manner. The connection of a smart water and smart electrical grid, which may include the use of an in-pipe hydroelectric turbine, is presented.

Aspects of the manufacturing of Flow Deflection Devices (FDDs) for wind turbines are presented as a system that requires adjustments in order to improve power output and adjust for changes in different conditions yet provides stability of shape.

Manufacture of wind turbine enhancement systems

The use of a shroud surrounding turbine blades to enhance the energy output creates a distribution of wind speeds in the plane of the blades. A unique class of such shrouds previously patented by the author creates zones of higher velocity near the tips. In order to take advantage of this new distribution of velocity, new principles of propeller design are required. One of the designs involves increasing the P/D ratio and the PHI in the outer portion of the blades. This solution works for liquids and gases.

Two-bladed vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT) have many efficiency advantages over turbines with other numbers of blades. Principles for making them in the ideal fashion are presented for both drag and lift configurations.

The special circumstances of working with hydroelectric turbines in pipes require innovations in blade shapes and systems that are presented here. An example is streamlining of the blades greater than that found in traditional hydroelectric turbines.

Placing water turbines in water flows

The flow of fluid into energy capture machines is crucial for determining the amount of energy extracted, particularly in the field of renewable energy resources. The current invention describes devices and methods for applying the physics of flow to energy capture machines, most commonly wind and water turbines, by enhancing the flow into the energy capture component by the appropriate placement of various objects called flow deflection devices (FDD). FDDs can make a highly significant improvement in power output.

Flow deflection devices and method for energy capture machines

Devices and methods for capturing electrical energy from ocean and other waves at improved cost and efficiency are presented. The major innovations include capturing energy in two vectors simultaneously and connectedly, new applications of Bernoulli's principle, and an application of the breaker effect. The invention presents devices using related principles for use in surface and subsurface waves, and the placing of the devices in the water and wave farms. The full system of wave capture includes many connected parts and power generators.
