A probe for collecting optically stimulated electron emission to inspect chemical reactions of a surface includes a light source to emit light on the surface, a collector, and a controller. The light source emits light on the surface. The collector is configured to detect photoelectrons emitted from the surface in response to the light from the light source impinging on the surface. The collector is further configured to provide a photocurrent based on the detected photoelectrons. The controller includes at least one processor and is operably coupled to the light source and the collector. The controller is configured to cause the light source to emit light on the surface, receive the photocurrent from the collector, and determine at least one chemical reaction of the surface based on the received photocurrent.

A method and system for ultrasonic testing of adhesion within a sample, which provides ultrasonic bursts of different frequencies to the sample and maintains a predetermined phase difference between echoes returned from the sample and representative reference signals of the bursts supplied to the sample until a spectrum of the phase differences versus frequency is obtained and from which properties of the adhesion at an interface reflecting the echoes are derivable.

Method for the evaluation of adhesive bond strength via swept-frequency ultrasonic phase measurements

Systems and methods for measuring phase dynamics and other properties (e.g. intracranial pressure) are disclosed. For example, the system may generate a reference waveform and a measurement waveform using digital synthesizers, each waveform having an identical constant frequency but also a relative phase shift. Next, system may send a tone-burst, via a transducer, into a sample (e.g. a skull or a bonded material), and then receive a reflected tone-burst in response. Then, a phase difference between the received tone-burst and the measurement waveform may be determined with a linear phase detector. Next, the phase shift of the measurement waveform may be adjusted, by the determined phase difference, such that there is no longer any phase difference between the received tone-burst and the adjusted measurement waveform generated by the appropriate digital synthesizer. A similar adjustment may occur after subsequent tone-bursts, allowing accurate monitoring of continuously variable phase relationships.

Systems and methods for measuring phase dynamics and other properties

Systems, methods, instruments and devices of the various embodiments enable improved characterization and comparison of the level and species of surface contaminants from photo-induced emission analysis. The various embodiments may provide flexibility for calculating and analyzing the time-dependence of emission efficiencies. Irregular and heterogeneous surfaces, including regionally multiply-connected surface compositions, may be analyzed according to the various embodiments, and the various embodiments include techniques that support specific contaminant identification. Various embodiment focusing techniques may enhance assessment of spatially differential regional analysis of the substrate for more critical applications. The various embodiments may also include differential comparison with reference surfaces, either through differential comparison while scanning, or by comparison to digitally stored responses to known contaminants.

Optically stimulated electron emission measurement device and method for characterizing and comparing levels and species of surface contaminants

A method of crimping wires includes positioning a wire/terminal combination between first and second crimp forming tools. A force is applied to the crimp forming tools to deform the wire/terminal combination. The method further includes measuring ultrasonic energy that is transmitted across the wire/terminal combination as the terminal is being deformed. A rate of change of the magnitude of the ultrasonic energy is also determined as the terminal is being deformed. The crimping process is terminated if the rate of change of the magnitude of the ultrasonic energy falls below a predefined threshold level. Data gathered during the crimping process can also be utilized to determine if a faulty crimp has occurred.

Method to control crimping processes using ultrasonic transmission analysis

A process and apparatus for collecting data for nondestructive evaluation of the quality of a crimped wire connector are provided. The process involves providing a crimping tool having an anvil and opposing jaw for crimping a terminal onto a stranded wire, moving the jaw relative to the anvil to close the distance between the jaw and the anvil and thereby compress the terminal against the wire, while transmitting ultrasonic waves that are propagated through the terminal wire combination and received at a receiving ultrasonic transducer as the jaw is moved relative to the anvil, and detecting and recording the position of the jaw relative to the anvil as a function of time and detecting and recording the amplitude of the ultrasonic wave that is received at the receiving ultrasonic transducer as a function of time as the jaw is moved relative to the anvil.

Process for nondestructive evaluation of the quality of a crimped wire connector

A system for determining the quality of an electrical wire crimp between a wire and ferrule includes an ultrasonically equipped crimp tool (UECT) configured to transmit an ultrasonic acoustic wave through a wire and ferrule, and a signal processor in communication with the UECT. The signal processor includes a signal transmitting module configured to transmit the ultrasonic acoustic wave via an ultrasonic transducer, signal receiving module configured to receive the ultrasonic acoustic wave after it passes through the wire and ferrule, and a signal analysis module configured to identify signal differences between the ultrasonic waves. The signal analysis module is then configured to compare the signal differences attributable to the wire crimp to a baseline, and to provide an output signal if the signal differences deviate from the baseline.

A method and apparatus for evaluating and/or quantifying damage to wire strands of a wire caused during installation of a crimped wire connector, involves launching an ultrasonic wave having known characteristics into a wire at a location that is either the crimp or is adjacent the crimped wire connector, and detecting changes in the characteristics (e.g., amplitude and/or phase shift) of the wave as it is propagates along a length of the wire.

Method and apparatus to detect wire pathologies near crimped connector

A diamond-shaped actuator for a flexible panel has an inter-digitated electrode (IDE) and a piezoelectric wafer portion positioned therebetween. The IDE and/or the wafer portion are diamond-shaped. Point sensors are positioned with respect to the actuator and measure vibration. The actuator generates and transmits a cancelling force to the panel in response to an output signal from a controller, which is calculated using a signal describing the vibration. A method for controlling vibration in a flexible panel includes connecting a diamond-shaped actuator to the flexible panel, and then connecting a point sensor to each actuator. Vibration is measured via the point sensor. The controller calculates a proportional output voltage signal from the measured vibration, and transmits the output signal to the actuator to substantially cancel the vibration in proximity to each actuator.

A method is provided for calibrating ultrasonic signals passed through a crimp formed with respect to a deformable body via an ultrasonically-equipped crimp tool (UECT). The UECT verifies a crimp quality using the ultrasonic signals. The method includes forming the crimp, transmitting a first signal, e.g., a pulse, to a first transducer of the UECT, and converting the first signal, using the first transducer, into a second signal which defines an ultrasonic pulse. This pulse is transmitted through the UECT into the crimp. A second transducer converts the second signal into a third signal, which may be further conditioned, and the ultrasonic signals are calibrated using the third signal or its conditioned variant. An apparatus for calibrating the ultrasonic signals includes a pulse module (PM) electrically connected to the first and second transducers, and an oscilloscope or display electrically connected to the PM for analyzing an electrical output signal therefrom.

Assessment and calibration of a crimp tool equipped with ultrasonic analysis features

An ultrasonic device and method obtains desirable crimp connections between a crimp connector and a wire, or bundle of wires, by assessing the desirability of connections made in a wire-to-wire connection and in other situations where two materials with good acoustic propagation characteristics are joined together via deformation. An embodiment of the device as a crimping tool comprises a compressing means, pulse-generating circuitry, at least one ultrasonic transmitting transducer, at least one ultrasonic receiving transducer, receiving circuitry, and a display. The user may return to a previously crimped connection and assess the desirability of the connection by compressing the device about the connection, sending an acoustic signal through the crimp, and comparing the received signal to a signal obtained from known desirable connections.

Device and method for connections made between a crimp connector and wire

A method is provided for marking electrical wiring with condition indicators. One or more markers are added to one or both of the insulative material and a surface of an electrical conductor such that it bonds thereto. Each marker is capable of emanating into a surrounding atmospheric environment as a gaseous effluent in response to a specific condition experienced by the electrical conductor.

An apparatus and method for performing quality inspections on a test surface based on optically stimulated emission of electrons. In one embodiment, the apparatus comprises a device for producing optical radiation having a plurality of different spectrum lines, selecting at least one of the spectrum lines, and directing the selected spectrum line to the test surface, and circuitry for detecting a current of photoelectrons emitted from the test surface, generating a signal indicative of photoelectron current, and for indicating a condition of quality based on the generated signal indicative of the photoelectron current. In one embodiment, the method comprises producing optical radiation having a plurality of different spectrum lines, selecting at least one of the spectrum lines and directing the selected spectrum line to the test surface, detecting a current of photoelectrons emitted from the test surface and generating a signal indicative of photoelectron current, and indicating a condition of quality based on the generated signal indicative of the photoelectron current.
