There is provided a polymer useful as a water absorbing agent. The polymer preferably contains the reaction product of an olefinically-unsaturated carboxylic acid, an alkyl acrylate and minor amounts of a crosslinking agent all in specified proportions.

The present invention is directed to a process for preparing cellulose containing water sorptive products from an aqueous suspension or paper furnish in accordance with conventional paper making techniques. The suspension or paper furnish employed in preparing the sorptive products comprises a polymer component and a fibrous component slurried in water. The polymer component is provided from a specifically defined class of crosslinked copolymers which contain carboxyl groups. A representative polymer from this class includes that obtained by reacting methyl acrylate and methacrylate acid in the presence of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate. The polymer component becomes water sorptive when the carboxyl groups present thereon are neutralized with a base. In the practice of the process of the present invention, a composite product is prepared from the above mentioned suspension, partially dried, and then neutralized in a specifically controlled manner. Neutralization is achieved while controlling the amount of base and water which contacts the composite product. The control is exercised in a manner sufficient to achieve a proper degree of salting and to prevent undue sorption of the water during neutralization. Such control results in a substantial improvement in the cost efficiency of the process since the amount of water which must be eventually evaporated from the neutralized product is held to a minimum.

Process for preparing water sorptive products

Novel thermosetting resin composites containing an inorganic filler material and a coupling agent are provided which include a coupling agent selected from the group consisting of (1) mono-, di-, and tri-long chain fatty acid esters of C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 mono and polyhydric alcohols; (2) polyoxyalkylene glycols and mono alkyl ethers of polyoxyalkylene glycols; and (3) polyoxyethylene derivatives of mono-, di-, and tri-hydroxy fatty acid esters of C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 mono- and polyhydric alcohols. The novel coupling agents are particularly useful in reducing the viscosity of highly loaded filler-prepolymer pastes to improve the dispersion of the filler and to promote interaction between the filler and the prepolymer so as to maintain and/or improve the properties of the final cured resins. The composites incorporating the coupling agents are useful in the manufacture of fiber glass reinforced sheet molding compounds (SMC) or bulk molding compounds (BMC), as well as in the production of laminating resins for use in spray-laminate operations.

Coupling agents for thermosetting composites

Compounds useful as surfactant coupling agents in the preparation of filled thermosetting resin composites are provided which comprise vinyl carboxylic acid ester derivatives of compounds selected from the group consisting of polyoxyalkylene glycols, monoalkyl ethers of polyoxyalkylene glycols, monoalkyl phenyl ethers of polyoxyalkylene glycols, and polyoxyethylene derivatives of mono-, di-, and tri-hydroxy fatty acid esters of C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 mono- and polyhydric alcohols. The novel compounds are particularly useful in reducing the viscosity of highly bonded filler-prepolymer pastes to improve the dispersion of the filler and to promote interaction between the filler and the prepolymer so as to maintain and/or improve the properties of the final cured resin. Surfactants and their use as coupling agents in thermosetting polymers

Novel crosslinked heteropolymers of vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride are provided which are useful as aqueous thickeners for aqueous formulations such as cosmetics and latex paints. Ester and amide derivatives of the combined maleic anhydride portion of the heteropolymer are also provided. The process for preparing the crosslinked heteropolymers comprises adding a maleic anhydride monomer, and crosslinking agent monomer, and catalyst in controlled amounts to a monomer solution of vinyl acetate.
