A fuel injection pump having a rotor with a distributor rotor at its outer end and an annular arrangement of radial pumping plunger bores providing a pumping chamber at its inner end. The pump rotor has a coaxial throughbore providing a valve bore intersecting the annular arrangement of plunger bores. A poppet valve, axially shiftable in the valve bore, has a sealing head engageable with a valve seat at the inner end of the rotor throughbore. An armature of a valve electromagnet is fixed to the outer end of the poppet valve for attraction by a coaxial stator when the electromagnet is energized. The poppet valve and armature are coupled to the pump rotor for rotation therewith. A coaxial accumulator bore is provided in a drive shaft adjacent the inner end of the rotor throughbore for supplying fuel to and receiving spilled fuel from the pumping chamber. A shaft driven transfer pump supplies fuel via an annulus in the distributor head to a chamber at the outer end of the rotor and then via the rotor throughbore and a coaxial bore in the poppet valve to the accumulator bore. A pressure regulator is connected between the accumulator bore and transfer pump inlet.

Rotary distributor type fuel injection pump

A fuel injection pump having an inlet metering valve with separate primary and boost ports for metering an intake charge of fuel to a charge pump, limit means for separately establishing a maximum charge limit of the charge pump and a lesser metered charge limit through the primary valve port, a multiple position hydraulic actuator for selectively setting an all-speed governor at each of a plurality of speed settings and a solenoid control for selectively positioning the hydraulic actuator and activating the boost port to switch the charge limit to said maximum limit at certain speed settings.

Fuel injection pump with multi-state load/speed control system

A fuel pump timing system having a hydraulic pressure transducer mounted for sensing a reaction hydraulic pulse to each fuel injection pressure pulse, a stepper motor for adjusting the fuel injection pump timing, engine sensors for sensing an engine reference position and certain engine operation data and a microprocessor connected to the transducer and engine sensors and operable for calculating the optimum and actual angles of fuel injection and for controlling the stepper motor to adjust the fuel injection pump timing in accordance with the difference between the optimum and actual angles of fuel injection.

Method and system for fuel injection timing

A fuel injection pump having a mechanically adjustable servo valve for controlling the timing of the pumping event is disclosed. A pivoted lever has one end which engages the spring seat of a timing control plunger servo valve which is also subjected to a speed related hydraulic signal and another end in the form of a bimetal strip which engages a cam clamped on the throttle shaft to pivot the lever according to the rotational position of the shaft. The profile of the cam is such as to retard the timing of the pumping stroke when the charge delivered by the pump is increased to delay pressure built up in the pump so that injection pressure in the associated nozzle is reached at a scheduled crankshaft angle regardless of variations in speed and load on the engine. A heater for the bimetal strip is provided to shift the servo spring seat to change the timing of injection upon demand or automatically under a prescribed engine operation condition. In one embodiment, the bimetal provides 3.degree.-4.degree. more advance when the engine is cold to compensate for the delayed ignition of the fuel.

Cold temperature advance mechanism

Apparatus is provided for temporarily advancing the timing of a fuel injection pump of the type having timing means responsive to a source of fuel under pressure correlated with the speed of an associated engine and also to the pressure of fuel in the pump housing. Valve means is provided for venting the pump housing which means may be manually or automatically actuated such as by use of a solenoid.

Apparatus for adjusting the timing of a fuel injection pump

A fuel injection pump having a timing piston shiftable for establishing the fuel injection timing, a servo valve piston for hydraulically positioning the timing piston, biased in the advance direction by a speed correlated fluid pressure, engine load responsive means acting through a compression spring to bias the servo valve piston in the retard direction, a bleed valve for establishing a regulated fuel pressure biasing the servo piston in the retard direction, the bleed valve being biased in its opening direction by the regulated pressure, and bleed valve control means responsive to continuous measurements of one or more operating parameters of an associated engine and acting through a compression spring to variably bias the bleed valve in its closing direction.

Timing control for fuel injection pump

A fuel injection pump for an internal combustion engine having an engine speed responsive governor for adjusting the metering valve of the pump. In order to control the idle speed of the engine under varying temperature conditions a bimetal spring is interposed between the governor and the idle spring. The governor spring assembly includes a preloaded compression spring which prevents the governor from controlling the metering valve above the idle speed range until a predetermined speed is reached.

Temperature compensated fuel injection pump

A liquid fuel injection pump for supplying timed charges of fuel to an engine by timed pumping strokes includes an adjustable timing mechanism for changing the timing of the pumping strokes. The timing mechanism includes an advance piston which is variably positionable in response to two different hydraulic control pressures. A speed related control pressure operates a servo mechanism associated with the advance piston to provide a component of speed advance. The reference position of a servo spring associated with the servo mechanism is varied by the second control pressure acting against a piston which mounts the spring and which is biased to a position of relatively advanced timing, thereby to add a component of advance which modifies or supplements the speed advance. The second control pressure is correlated with engine load and/or acceleration and in one embodiment is derived from the positioning of the fuel metering means and in another embodiment is derived from the intake manifold air pressure such as that from a turbocharged engine so that the timing is relatively advanced at low loads and during acceleration, and is relatively retarded at higher loads. A gate controlled by the position of a fuel limiting plunger coacts with the advance piston's servo mechanism to prevent advance of the advance piston during engine cranking, and maximum fuel delivery per pumping stroke is controlled according to intake manifold air pressure.

Fuel injection pump and timing control therefor

The present invention provides a liquid fuel injection pump suited for the sequential delivery of measured charges of liquid fuel under high pressure to an associated engine in timed relationship therewith comprising pump chamber means wherein the charges are pressurized to high pressure, a passage for delivering the fuel to said pump chamber means, a metering valve in said passage for reglating the amount of fuel in said measured charges of fuel, said metering valve comprising a pair of relatively movable members respectively having ports in the adjacent surfaces thereof adapted for registry, means to vary the amount of overlap of said ports in a first direction to control the quantity of fuel in each measured charge of fuel in accordance with the load on the associated engine, and means for controlling the relative movement of said members in a second direction transverse to said first direction to vary the amount of overlap of said ports in said second direction in accordance with the speed of the associated engine whereby the amount of overlap in said second direction increases with increased engine speed thereby to maintain the quantity of fuel in sequential charges of fuel at a substantially constant level for a given setting of said means regardless of changes in engine speed.

Fuel injection pump and governor and timing control system therefor

This invention relates to improved fuel injection apparatus for compression-ignition engines and the like and more particularly to a novel and improved check valve arrangement for a rotary distributor fuel injection pump of the type employed for the delivery of a measured amount of fuel to each of the cylinders of an associated internal combustion engine.

Fuel injection pump and replaceable check valve therefor

There is disclosed a rotary distributor type liquid fuel injection pump for delivering measured charges of fuel under high pressure sequentially to the cylinders of an associated engine in timed relation therewith. The pump includes a movable metering valve for regulating the quantity of fuel in the charges. The metering valve also controls a normally closed bypass port which is opened by the metering valve as the metering valve approaches its closed position to continue the circulation of cool fuel from the supply tank through the pump whenever the metering valve is closed as during the downhill coasting of the vehicle on which the pump is mounted.
