A compact flat panel color calibration system includes a lens prism optic able to pass a narrow, perpendicular, and uniform cone angle of incoming light to a spectrally non-selective photodetector. The calibration system also includes a microprocessor operable to determine the luminance of the display based upon the information gathered by the photodetector. A software module included in the calibration system is then operable to process the luminance information in order to adjust the flat panel display.

Compact flat panel color calibration system

A method, computer-usable medium, and system for processing graphical data for display on a multi-component display is disclosed. Embodiments improve the display quality of multi-component displays by modifying graphical data to preemptively compensate for distortion caused by interstitial layers and/or display screens of the multi-component display, thereby enabling display of graphical objects from multi-component displays with improved optical characteristics. For example, where components of a multi-component display blur displayed images, graphical data used to display graphical objects may be modified to sharpen the graphical objects before display. The pre-sharpening amplifies the high frequency components of the displayed graphical objects to compensate for the dampening caused by passing the graphical objects through the components of the multi-component display.

A method of controlling brightness, color, hue, color temperature, gamma response or contrast of at least one image for display on a multi-layer display device characterized by carrying out the steps of: receiving said at least one image(s) to be displayed, detecting the brightness, color, hue, color temperature, gamma response or contrast of said image(s) to be displayed, determining the transmissivity of each layer of the multi layer display device in the localized area of said image(s) to achieve the brightness, color, hue, color temperature, gamma response and/or contrast detected or received, communicating the determined transmissivity of each layer of the multi layer display device in the localized area of said image(s) to a display device or storage device. A software device designed to do the same and a display device which can be utilized to controlling brightness, color, hue, color temperature, gamma response or contrast of at least one image.

Enhanced viewing experience of a display through localised dynamic control of background lighting level

A flat panel LCD includes electronic circuitry for coupling to a host computer to receive a white-balance adjustment control signal, and electronic circuitry for receiving image data to be rendered on the flat panel LCD. Further, the flat panel LCD of one embodiment is configured for coupling to a color-sensing device to receive optical characteristics data of the flat panel LCD detected by the color-sensing device. The white balance adjustment mechanisms include the provision of two or more light sources of differing color temperature, whose brightness can be independently varied (and distributed through a light distribution mechanism) to adjust color temperature without altering the grayscale resolution of the RGB colors. The flat panel LCD further includes white balance adjustment software and gamma correction software for generating white-balance adjustment control signals and appropriate gamma correction curves.

System and method for providing a wide aspect ratio flat panel display monitor independent white-balance adjustment and gamma correct capabilities

A method of controlling the point spread function of an image projected with said image being diffused by a filter; said point spread function is a result of the application of spatial filter(s) on said image; with said control of the point spread function effected by varying the distance between such image and said spatial filter(s) and varying the bidirectional scattering transmission function of the spatial filter(s). Said spatial filter may be a holographic diffuser, which by method of manufacture has a well defined bi-directional scattering transmission spread function. Control of said spread function is particularly useful to maintain image quality while abating moir&#xe9; interference in situations where two periodic patterns are layered causing moir&#xe9; interference.

A system and method are described herein for controlling the white balance and providing gamma correction without compromising gray-scale dynamic range in a flat panel liquid crystal display (LCD). System and method for providing a wide aspect ratio flat panel display monitor independent white-balance adjustment and gamma correction capabilities

A large area wide aspect ratio flat panel display having high resolution for high information content display. The present invention includes a liquid crystal flat panel display monitor having a wide aspect ratio. In one embodiment, the wide aspect ratio is substantially 1.6:1, having 1,600 pixels across the horizontal and 1,024 across the vertical. In this embodiment, the present invention is an SXGA-wide flat panel display monitor having high resolution for high information content display. The monitor of the present invention is particularly well suited for the display of text, graphics and other types of still and/or motion audio/visual works. The wide aspect ratio allows the display of multiple pages, side-by-side, thereby facilitating certain tasks such as desktop publishing, presentation of interactive windows, presentation of menus, chart viewing, digital photography, tactical military displays and weather and aircraft monitoring. The novel wide aspect ratio monitor also provides compensation film layers, rather than dual domain technology, for providing off axis viewing capability in both the horizontal and vertical directions. The novel wide aspect ratio monitor also provides white color balance adjustment. The white color balancing mechanisms include the provision of two or more light sources, of differing color temperature, whose brightness is varied (and distributed through a light distribution mechanism) to adjust color temperature without altering the grayscale resolution of the RGB colors.

Large area wide aspect ratio flat panel monitor having high resolution for high information content display

The invention provides a liquid crystal, TFT display with driver lines folded around a light pipe and a digitizer. The digitizer has grid routing lines folded around a shield where the shield is connected to a shield of the computer system electronics. The display drivers and grid controller are mounted inward of an edge of the display. The glass layers surrounding the beads can have different thicknesses and composition while the liquid crystal surrounding the beads can be at a pressure less than atmospheric pressure. A surface of the display provides pen/pencil on paper feel as a digitizer pen is moved across the surface via hardness coatings and surface topography.

Brightness in the LCD is enhanced by polarization recycling using a pre-polarizing film to pre-polarize light, and a special reflector for recycling light reflected by the pre-polarizing film. In one embodiment, the pre-polarizing film comprises a layer of DBEF brightness enhancement film, and the rear reflector is made of a PTFF material. In another embodiment, the rear reflector is covered with a film comprising barium sulfate. The multiple light sources are selected such that, at any color temperature within a predetermined range, the brightness of the LCD is not reduced below a given threshold minimum (e.g., 70 percent of the maximum brightness). Another constraint for selecting the light sources is that within the predetermined color temperature range, the color temperature is held close to the black body curve of the CIE chromaticity diagram. The light sources are also selected so that their maximum brightness point is set to be near the middle of the predetermined color temperature range.

Liquid crystal flat panel display with enhanced backlight brightness and specially selected light sources

A method and system for updating the colorimetric characteristics of a flat panel display over the display's entire lifetime. An advantage of the present invention is that the useful life and the color accuracy of a flat panel display can be extended. In one embodiment of the invention, an initial set of luminance data of a flat panel monitor is programmed into addressable memory locations within that monitor. Thereafter, the luminance output of the lamps of the flat panel monitor is tracked with luminance or colorimetric measuring devices. According to the present invention, the luminance data are used in determining the correlation between voltage settings of the lamps and the color characteristics of the display such as color temperature. By measuring the luminance of the display periodically, a precise and accurate color profile of the flat panel display can be maintained.
