A multi-layer metal gasket for an internal combustion engine having a first plate having a major surface, a return defining a combustion opening and a flange, a second plate defining an annular opening adjacent the return and lying between the flange and the major surface of the first plate, a first annular embossment in the major surface of the first metal plate and having a projection extending towards the flange and lying within the vertical projection of the flange, and a second annular embossment in the second plate, the second embossment defining a second projection and a recess, the second projection extending towards the flange, with the recess nestingly receiving the projection of the first embossment, and the confronting surfaces of the first projection and the recess being substantially coincident throughout, with the first and second embossments being entirely disposed between the return and the flange and lying within the vertical projection of the flange.

A method of manufacturing a gasket having an improved elastomeric sealing bead. The method includes the steps of providing an embossment in a gasket body and filling the cavity of the embossment with an elastomer. The gasket is then positioned in a press and the embossment is squeezed to displace the elastomer into a sealing bead which projects from the flattened recess and beyond the major surface of the gasket body. The gasket is then removed from the press prior to use and installation in its intended environment.

Method of forming a sealing bead on a gasket

A generally rectangular, flat gasket for use in sealing oil pan covers. The gasket has a main body with a rigid core and facing layers. The ends of the main body have a greater thickness than that of the main body. The gasket may be shipped in a flat condition, but is bendable in the zones of the ends to form arched ends for sealing purposes. A method of making such a gasket is also disclosed.

Oil pan gasket and method of making same

An improved cylinder head gasket assembly for an internal combustion engine. The zone of the metallic core of the gasket assembly immediately surrounding a combustion chamber is provided with an annular embossment defining a recess which is at least partially filled with a flexible, expanded compressible graphite material. The zone of the embossment is devoid of facing layers. Preferably, the embossment is embraced and ensheathed by armoring, so that the graphite material seals between the armor and the metallic core, all to enhance sealing of the combustion chamber. A secondary embossment filled with graphite material may provide a secondary seal.

A method of manufacturing a cylinder head gasket comprising the steps of preassembling a main gasket body and a fire ring and then precompressing the gasket to alter the characteristics of one of the gasket body and fire ring, so that a portion of the available design head load will be taken up by each of the gasket body and fire ring when the precompressed gasket is assembled in an engine at the available design head load. The precompressed gasket fire ring displays different thickness and compression characteristics resulting from the precompression of the preassembled gasket, enhancing the capacity of the gasket effectively and consistently to seal a head and block at the available design head load.

Head gaskets and method of making same

A multi-layer engine gasket is provided for resisting scoring, scratching and abrasive-erosion. The gasket assembly includes a flat-elongated core or base, a sheet of composite gasket material on each face of the base, armor to seal the combustion chambers, and an exterior layer of erosion resistant material applied to the facing sheets along one or more of the two shorter ends of the gasket assembly. Apertures are provided for the combustion chambers, the water and fluid passageways and the head bolts. The abrasive-erosion resistant layer is a mixture of molybdenum disulfide and graphite, preferably with a minor amount of a binder and adhesion promoter. The abrasive-erosion resistant layer is selectively applied to the end zones of the gasket assembly.

An improved heat gasket assembly for sealing the block and head of an internal combustion engine where the head mounts a precombustion chamber, and method of making that gasket assembly. The gasket assembly comprises a main gasket body and an armored fire ring mounted at the combustion openings. The fire ring provides a precombustion tab underlying the precombustion chamber, against which sealing occurs. To enhance that seal, spanner elements are positioned between the wire ring and the lower leg of the armor of the fire ring in the zones in which the periphery of the precombustion chamber overlie the wire ring. When the gasket assembly is compressed between the block and the head (and precombustion chamber) the spanner elements induce a more effective and consistent seal between the fire ring, the head, and the precombustion chamber regardless of whether the precombustion chamber is flush with, projects from, or is recessed with respect to, the head.

Head gasket assembly and method of making same

A bridge bearing assembly comprising an elastomeric bearing pad having side edges and end edges. The bearing pad has contactor surfaces extending upwardly from a mounting plate. A metallic shear controller pin fixed to the mounting plate is positioned adjacent the contactor surfaces. It has surface portions spaced from, but positioned to contact, the contactor surfaces when the bearing pad is deformed in shear in the direction of the end edges. The upper surface of the bearing pad is in contact with a slide plate. Controller pins may be positioned in an opening in, or at end edges of the bearing pad and may be cylindrical or frustoconical. Temperature compensating indicators are provided on the bearing assembly for selectively positioning the slide plate relative to the bearing pad. Preinstallation connectors for securing the slide plate to the bearing pad may be used to help prevent separation of the slide surfaces of the slide plate and bearing pad.
