An encoded information reading (EIR) terminal can comprise a microprocessor, a memory, and an EIR device including a two-dimensional imager. The EIR device can be configured to output raw message data containing an encoded message and/or outputting a decoded message corresponding to an encoded message. The EIR terminal can be configured, responsive to acquiring an image containing decodable indicia, to pre-process the acquired image and transmit the pre-processed image to an external decoding computer for decoding the decodable indicia.

A network for remotely managing a plurality of remote devices that are each individually configurable to have selected operating characteristics includes a server connected to the network and to the plurality of remote devices, and a display coupled to a computer which is connected to the network. Also included are means for assigning a common icon to each remote device of the same type and displaying the icons on the server display, and means for coloring each icon to indicate a current configuration status of each remote device and for displaying the color on the icon on the display.

A hardware device architecture is described that improves security and flexibility in access to hardware device settings. A device management proxy service is digitally signed and granted access to device settings. Applications are then digitally provisioned by the proxy service and only validated signed requests from applications are permitted to change hardware device settings. Further granularity over hardware device settings is achieved through user accounts and groups established by the applications.

Methods and apparatus for modifying the feature set of data collection devices are disclosed. Requests are receiving at a computer system different from the data collection device for a new configuration of the data collection device, the request including an identifier for the data collection device, identification of one or more features, and for each identified feature, an indication to modify the operation of a feature. The identifier may comprise an identifier that is unique for a particular data collection device or an indication of a group of devices, e.g. a model number. Prior to authorizing the new configuration, a determination may be made as to whether the identified data collection device(s) are suitable for the new configuration by consulting a configuration database. To implement the new configuration, an encoded authorization file is generated based on the requested configuration and the identifier of the data collection device(s). The encoded authorization file is transmitted to one or more data collection devices. Each data collection device that receives an encoded authorization file attempts to decode of the license using its identifier(s). If the authorization file is successfully decoded, a license key on that device is updated to implement the new configuration.

A system and method for regulating the injection of barcode scan data into an application running on a smart device is provided. The system includes a running application on a smart device. The running application has text fields with text field properties. The text field properties designate to either accept access or restrict access to the text fields from barcode scan data. The system further includes a keyboard buffer and a scan wedge having access to the keyboard buffer. The scan wedge is provided with means to discriminate between access and restricted access designations in the text field properties. The means to discriminate is configured to interrogate the text field properties to determine if the text field permits access to barcode scan data. The scan wedge is also configured to begin a barcode scan operation if the text field permits access to barcode scan data and to load barcode scan data into the keyboard buffer. The keyboard buffer is configured to display the barcode scan data as text in the text field of the application. The scan wedge is provided with logic to recognize patterns in barcode scan data. The scan wedge is configured to inspect the barcode scan data for regular patterns consistent with malicious attacks and if present, is configured to instruct the keyboard buffer to insert an error message in the running application.

System and method for regulating barcode data injection into a running application on a smart device
