A system and method for analyzing network power consumption is disclosed. The system and method for analyzing network power consumption includes the steps of specifying at least one service which will run on said network; defining a plurality of resources provisioned in the network, each having an associated power efficiency; associating a network path with the service; calculating a sum of the power efficiencies for the resources of the network path; and outputting the sum to a display device. The system and method for analyzing network power consumption is particularly useful for identifying power consumption efficiencies throughout a communication network.

System and method for analyzing network power consumption

The present invention includes an optical amplifier and method for reducing the impact of transient events within an optical transmission system. Specifically, a positive transient power or amplifier setting adjustment limit is applied based upon a number of active channels or a current 'steady state' operating condition. This adjustment limit is described in terms of a number of channels to be amplified. By controlling the adjustment limit in this manner, automatic control of the amplifier is provided for a loss of channel condition as well as for the addition of a single or few channel condition. If a larger positive transient occurs, the control will not adjust the power limit, and the positive transient power will therefore be suppressed.

Positive optical amplifier power transient suppression

In one embodiment, a control method, according to which a cascade of control messages is propagated between nodes of an optically transparent network, with each message being sent from a node to an adjacent downstream node to inform the latter about a control operation scheduled to be performed at the message-sending node and/or an upstream node that impacts an optical communication signal received at that downstream node. The cascade of control messages effectively creates an ad hoc control domain, in which control operations performed at various nodes of that domain can be coordinated to reduce unfavorable interactions between those control operations. By repeatedly propagating appropriate cascades of control messages through the network, control domains can be changed dynamically and adaptively to reflect any changes to the network topology, equipment, and/or traffic distribution.

Coordination of control operations in an optical network

Optical amplifier transient control methods and apparatus which limit the extent of cumulative transient gain errors in the rapid control of multiple optical amplifiers in a communication system. In an exemplary embodiment, if the input power to an optical amplifier drops below a predetermined threshold, the gain of the amplifier is set to clamp the output power of the amplifier to its initial level less the threshold, thereby preventing the continuous growth of gain error. This is based on the assumption that once the input power goes below the threshold, it should no longer go above the threshold until the transient condition is corrected. The present invention can operate to handle down-as well as up-transient events and is not amplifier technology dependent.

Optical amplifier transient control with gain error limits

An optical data signal can be sampled by linearly combining the optical data signal with optical sampling pulses, and delivering the combination to first and second balanced detectors. The optical data signal and the optical sampling pulse are configured to have a first phase difference at the first balanced detector and a second phase difference at the second balanced detector. Typically, a difference between the first phase difference and the second phase difference is configured to be about 90 degrees. In-phase and quadrature balanced detector outputs can be combined as a sum of squares to produce a linear sampling signal representative of data signal intensity, and the sample pulses can be configured to temporally step through the optical data signal so that a sampled representation of the optical data signal is obtained.

Linear optical sampling methods and apparatus

An optical performance monitor (OPM), e.g., for use in an optical network. The OPM may be configured to characterize one or more impairments in an optical signal modulated with data. The OPM has an optical autocorrelator configured to sample the autocorrelation function of the optical signal, e.g., using two-photon absorption. Autocorrelation points at various bit delays independently or in combination with average optical power may be used to detect and/or quantify one or more of the following: loss of data modulation, signal contrast, pulse broadening, peak power fluctuations, timing jitter, and deviations from the pseudo-random character of data. In addition, the OPM may be configured to perform Fourier transformation based on the autocorrelation points to obtain corresponding spectral components. The spectral components may be used to detect and/or quantify one or more of chromatic dispersion, polarization mode dispersion, and misalignment of a pulse carver and data modulator. The OPM may be further configured to generate feedback, e.g., to network operators to improve network performance.

Performance monitoring in an optical communication system

A channel-growth plan for an optical transmission system selects channels such that the transients that result in the channels that survive a network failure, such as an upstream fiber cut, are either minimized or effectively handled by some transient-control technique. In one embodiment, the growth plan may try to keep post-transient surviving channel total power gain equal to the pre-transient total power gain. Alternatively, the growth plan may try to distribute the surviving channels uniformly over the pre-transient channel-frequency range. Other manifestations are to keep (1) the average power of the surviving channels substantially equal to the average power of the pre-transient channels or (2) the average power of the post-transient surviving channels substantially equal to the power level of a specified channel. Transient-control can be balanced with conventional low-cost and high-performance goals to provide an effective hybrid channel-growth plan.

Transient-based channel growth for optical transmission systems

An optical performance monitor (OPM) adapted to (i) sample an autocorrelation function corresponding to an optical signal transmitted in an optical network and (ii) based on the sampling, characterize two or more impairments concurrently present in the optical signal. In one embodiment, the OPM has an optical autocorrelator (OAC) coupled to a signal processor (SP). The OAC receives the optical signal from the network, generates two or more samples of its autocorrelation function, and applies said samples to the SP. The SP processes the samples and generates two or more signal metrics. Based on the signal metrics and reference data corresponding to the impairments, the SP then obtains a measure of each of the impairments.

Performance monitoring based on optical autocorrelation

In an optical transmission system, operations of certain elements are adjusted in an individualized manner after detecting a change in the total optical power level corresponding to multiple optical channels in a link of the system in order to control transients in those channels. For example, in response to a sudden drop in the number of channels resulting from a fiber cut, the power levels of the optical pumps in a Raman amplifier in an OADM are adjusted to reduce transient gain errors in the surviving channels, where the adjustment to the pump power level for each different optical pump is a function of both the detected change in the total optical power level and at least one specified coefficient for that particular optical pump, in order to handle non-linearities in the response of the Raman amplifier to the sudden drop in the number of optical channels.

Transient control in optical transmission systems

A photomultiplier module (PMT), preferably a PMT with a gallium arsenide (GaAs) photocathode, is used as a N-photon detector (N is an integer &#x2267;2). The PMT detects the N-photon absorption rate of an optical signal having a wavelength range extending from 1.0 &#x3bc;m to an upper wavelength region that increases as the number of photons simultaneously absorbed by the PMT increases beyond two. The N-photon absorption rate is used by a signal compensation apparatus to reduce impairments which affect the rate, such as group velocity dispersion and/or polarization mode dispersion, in a received optical pulse communication signal. The N-photon absorption rate can also be used to determine the optical signal-to-noise ratio of a received optical pulse communication signal, and/or to synchronize a second optical pulse signal with the first optical signal.

Dynamic measurement of and compensation for impairments to optical data communication pulses

An optical device having a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) coupled to an optical filter, which device may be used for optical performance monitoring. One embodiment of the invention provides an optical regenerator/monitor (RM), in which an SOA is used both for optical regeneration of a communication signal applied to the RM and for evaluation of the quality of that signal. The RM has (i) a 2R regenerator, which includes the SOA and an optical filter, and (ii) a relatively simple signal processor configured to receive optical signals from two or more sampling points located at the regenerator. In one configuration, the processor evaluates the quality of the communication signal by comparing optical power tapped from the input and output of the regenerator. The RM, so configured, can be used, for example, to monitor chromatic dispersion and/or optical noise in the communication signal. Advantageously, a single RM of the invention can perform network functions of two separate prior-art devices, a regenerator and an optical performance monitor.

Optical performance monitoring using a semiconductor optical amplifier

An orthogonal heterodyne in-band optical signal-to-noise-ratio (OSNR) monitoring method and apparatus that use the polarization characteristics of two narrow bandwidth filtered optical spectral components which is not only insensitive to the effects of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and inter-channel cross-phase modulation (XPM) induced nonlinear polarization scattering, but also independent of bit rate and modulation format. The monitoring method is demonstrated for both linear and nonlinear systems.
