A first network node, a second network node and methods therein, for handling baseband processing of signals communicated with wireless devices in a wireless network. The first network node communicates a first type of signals with a first wireless device and performs a first part of baseband processing of the first type of signals using a non-GPP implemented processor. The first network node also communicates the first type of signals with the second network node for a second part of baseband processing of the first type of signals using a GPP implemented processor. The first network node further communicates a second type of signals with a second wireless device and performs both of said first and second parts of baseband processing of the second type of signals using the non-GPP implemented processor.

Methods and network nodes for handling baseband processing

Disclosed is a method performed by a first unit of a base station system of a wireless communication network for handling a signal for transmission over a fronthaul link between the first unit and a second unit of the base station system. The base station system includes a base unit and a remote unit. The method includes receiving the signal having at least one complex value, each consisting of two subparts, each being represented by a first number of bits, and transmitting the signal over the fronthaul link to the second unit, wherein at least two subparts are represented in a subgroup, the subgroup being a binary codeword having an integer number of bits that is a multiple of a second non-integer number of bits allocated per subpart, the second non-integer number of bits being fewer than the first number of bits.

Methods and units of a base station system for handling a signal for transmission over a fronthaul link between the units

Embodiments presented herein relates to a method for saving power in remote radio heads (RRHs) of a wireless communication system. The method is performed in an RRH controller node associated with a plurality of RRHs or the same cell, each of the plurality of RRHs having at least a first antenna branch A of the cell and a second antenna branch B of the cell. The method comprises providing Sa first power saving indication to a first RRH of the plurality of RRHs, to inactivate its first antenna branch A, and providing Sa second power saving indication to a second RRH of the plurality of RRHs, to inactivate its second antenna branch B, wherein at least one antenna branch is kept active in the first and second RRH. RRH controller nodes, a computer programs and a computer program product for saving power in RRHs of a wireless communication system are also presented.

Saving power in remote radio heads

In mobile communications networks, requirements on signal distortion may be fulfilled at a lower bit rate, or alternatively quantization noise be reduced for a given bit rate, by including fractional exponent bits in a block floating point format. One or more fractional exponent bits may apply to all samples in the block. Alternatively, fractional bits may apply to sub-blocks within the block. The optimal number of fractional bits depends on the number of samples in the block.

Efficient transfer of IQ sample data

Disclosed is a technique for estimating crosstalk between a first and second electrical transmission lines. The method comprises obtaining measurements of a received near end crosstalk, NEXT, signal, the NEXT signal being received at a first end of the second transmission line over a time period as a result of an electrical signal sent onto the first transmission line from its first end, the obtained measurements being in the time domain. Subsequently, a crosstalk coupling estimate is obtained per transmission line sub-interval by compensating the obtained measurements in the time domain of the received NEXT signal for round-trip attenuation of the sent signal from the first end of the first line to the sub-interval and back to the first end of the second line, and an estimate of a total crosstalk coupling is obtained by adding together at least some of the obtained crosstalk coupling estimates per transmission line sub-interval.

Method and system for estimating crosstalk between electrical transmission lines

A method performed by an encoder of a base station system, for handling a data stream for transmission over a transmission connection between a remote unit and a base unit of the base station system, the remote unit being arranged to transmit wireless signals to, and receive from, mobile stations. The method comprises quantizing a plurality of IQ samples, converting the quantized plurality of IQ samples to IQ predictions, calculating per sample a difference between the quantized plurality of IQ samples and the IQ predictions in order to create IQ prediction errors. The method further comprises quantizing the IQ predictions or the IQ prediction errors, entropy encoding the IQ prediction errors and sending the entropy encoded IQ prediction errors over the transmission connection to a decoder of the base station system. The method can be performed by a decoder.

Methods, decoder and encoder for handling a data stream for transmission between a remote unit and a base unit of a base station system

It is provided a method for reducing bit rate requirement over an uplink fronthaul link. The method is performed in a fronthaul transmitter of a radio network node and comprises the steps of: determining a group of frequency-domain resource elements having been received over a wireless channel (); estimating channel information (); reducing a number of bits for representing the respective frequency-domain resource element, to thereby obtain a modified resource element (); transmitting the modified resource elements of the group over the fronthaul link to a fronthaul receiver (); and transmitting compression metadata (), indicating how the reduction was performed, over the fronthaul link to the fronthaul receiver which performs the steps of receiving the modified resource elements (), receiving the compression metadata () and expanding the resource elements to increase the number of bits for representing the frequency-domain resource elements ().

Reducing bit rate requirement over an uplink fronthaul link

A method () of controlling utilization of a fronthaul link in a wireless communication network, the fronthaul link being configured to transport a time-domain sample representation of a carrier having a traffic load, the time-domain sample representation of the carrier being generated at a bit rate. The method comprising: obtaining () an indication of a traffic load of the carrier; determining () a new bit rate for the time-domain sample representation of the carrier, the new bit rate being dependent on the indication of the traffic load of the carrier; and generating () a control signal configured to cause the time-domain sample representation of the carrier to be generated at the new bit rate.

Apparatus and method of controlling utilization of a fronthaul link in a wireless communication network

The present disclosure relates to methods and devices for communication systems comprising an electrically conductive line. The disclosure proposes a method in a line estimation device for determining termination characteristics of an electrically conductive line in a communication system. The method comprises outputting a test signal to the line, wherein the test signal is a wideband test signal with a bandwidth arranged to provide an adequate measurement time-resolution. The method further comprises receiving reflections from impedance discontinuities of the line in response to the test signal. The method also comprises forming a trace of the reflections. The method additionally comprises identifying at least one anomaly in the trace of reflections. The method yet further comprises determining termination characteristics of the line based on characteristics of the trace before and after the identified at least one anomaly. The disclosure also relates to corresponding line estimation devices and computer programs.

Methods and devices for determining termination characteristics of an electrically conductive line

A communication device and method therein for loopback testing. The device comprises a transmitter and a receiver and applies FDD for communication over one or more lines. The method comprises degrading a linearity of the transmitter, as compared to the linearity during normal operation. The method further comprises transmitting at least one test signal in a transmit frequency band, such that at least one signal is created in a receive frequency band, wherein the created at least one signal is a distortion product of the at least one test signal; and further, receiving a response to the at least one created signal in the receive frequency band.

Loopback testing in frequency division duplex systems

The present disclosure relates to a Time Duplex Division (TDD) modem and a method in such a modem for making Single Ended Line Test (SELT) measurements. The device comprises a transmitter and a receiver and it has a normal mode of TDD communication. In these devices, Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) is used as line measurement. It has a number of drawbacks, and for overcoming said drawbacks, Frequency Domain Reflectometry (FDR) measurement techniques adapted for TDD devices are suggested.

Single ended line test methods for time duplex division devices

The present invention relates to a method and a system for initiating bi-directional communication in a time-division duplex (TDD) communication system between a customer premises equipment (CPE) modem, such as a DSL modem, and an operator modem, such as a DSLAM. The invention is characterized in that the transmission of the CPE modem is aligned with the time-division duplex timing structure present in received crosstalk noise when transmitting initiation signals, so-called handshake tones.

Method and system for initiating bi-directional communication in a time-division duplex communication system

A method and a test device for determining communication characteristics of a metal cable suitable for use in a communication system are provided. The method comprises transmitting a wideband test signal on the metal cable; receiving a reflected signal as a result of the wideband test signal; and determining an interval of the reflected signal to be analyzed, the interval corresponding to a part of the cable length. The method further comprises approximating the reflected signal within the interval by a regression model; and determining characteristics of the metal cable based on the regression model.
