A vehicular drive shaft assembly is balanced about an axis of rotation. The vehicular drive shaft assembly includes a drive shaft tube having a first end and a second end, with a first tube yoke including a first radially outer wall fixedly mounted to the first end of the drive shaft tube. A first balance pendulum is located radially inward of the first outer wall and rotationally fixable relative to the first tube yoke, and a second balance pendulum is located radially inward of the first outer wall and is also rotationally fixable relative to the first tube yoke. The balance pendulums can be rotated before being locked in place in order to account for imbalances in the drive shaft assembly. A second tube yoke fixedly mounted to the second end of the drive shaft tube may also include balance pendulums, similar to the first, in order to provide additional drive shaft assembly balancing capabilities.

Drive shaft balancing

A driveshaft assembly is balanced for rotation during use by initially disposing an annular band about a portion thereof. The band is then secured to the driveshaft assembly, such as by welding, adhesives, frictional engagement, and the like. After the band is secured to the driveshaft assembly, one or more balance weights can be secured to the band, such as by welding, adhesives, and the like, at desired locations to balance the driveshaft assembly for rotation. The band functions as a mounting surface upon which the balance weights can be secured to balance the driveshaft assembly for rotation. Because the balance weights are secured not directly to the driveshaft assembly, but rather are mounted indirectly thereon by the band, the driveshaft assembly is protected from damage that might otherwise result from welding the balance weights directly thereto. The method is particularly useful when a portion of the driveshaft assembly has a relatively small wall thickness or is formed from a material having a relatively low melting temperature.

Driveshaft assembly that is balanced for rotation and method of manufacturing same

A method of manufacturing a driveshaft for use in a vehicular drive train system includes the initial step of providing an inner tube including a portion having a plurality of splines formed therein. A portion of an outer tube is then disposed about the portion of the inner tube in an overlapping or telescoping manner, preferably in a press fit relationship. Next, portions of the outer tube are deformed radially inwardly about the inner tube. The radially inwardly deformed portions of the outer tube that extend between the external splines of the inner tube define internal splines on the outer tube. The internal splines formed on the outer tube cooperate with the external splines formed on the inner tube to provide a rotational driving connection between the inner tube and the outer tube, while normally preventing relative axial movement therebetween. However, if a relatively large axial force is applied to the ends of the driveshaft assembly, some or all of the splines will deform, allowing relative axial movement to occur between the inner tube and the outer tube. The splines may extend parallel to the rotational axis of the inner and outer tubes, or alternatively may be tapered relative to the inner tube.

Method of manufacturing an axially collapsible driveshaft assembly

An axially collapsible driveshaft includes a first driveshaft tube section, a connecting member having a first end portion that is secured to the first driveshaft tube section, and a second driveshaft tube that is secured to a second end portion of the connecting member. During normal operation of the drive train assembly, torque is transmitted through the driveshaft by means of the securement between the first driveshaft tube section, the connecting member, and the second driveshaft tube section. However, if a relatively large axial force is applied to the end portions of the driveshaft, either or both of the end portions of the connecting member are designed to fracture, allowing relative axial movement to occur between the first driveshaft tube section and the second driveshaft tube section. An annular recess may be formed in the connecting member adjacent to either or both of the end portions that are secured to the driveshaft tube sections. Such a recess can be provided to weaken that end of the connecting member to insure that the fracture occurs reliably at the same location when a predetermined axial force is applied to the end portions of the driveshaft.

Axially collapsible driveshaft assembly

A method of manufacturing a collapsible driveshaft assembly includes the steps of disposing an end of a first tube within a forming die having a non-circular cross sectional shape, expanding the end of the first tube into conformance with the die cavity, inserting an end of a second tube is inserted within the deformed end of the first tube, and expanding the end of the second tube into conformance with the end of the first tube. As a result of this expansion, outwardly extending regions and inwardly extending regions of the second tube extend into cooperation with outwardly extending regions and inwardly extending regions of the first tube so as to cause the first and second tubes to function as cooperating male and female splined members. As a result, a rotational driving connection therebetween to form the driveshaft. When a relatively large axial force is applied to the ends of the telescoping driveshaft, the second tube will move axially within the first tube, thereby collapsing and absorbing energy.

An annular two-piece thrust washer for use between the end wall of a bearing cup and the axially outer ends of the bearings and trunnion of a universal joint assembly includes a first piece and a second piece. The first piece is sized to be disposed between the axially outer ends of the bearings and the end wall of the bearing cup. In a preferred embodiment, a circumferential recess is formed at the junction between the radially inner surface and the axially outer surface of the first piece. The second piece of the thrust washer is sized to be disposed between the trunnion and the end wall of the bearing cup. When assembled, the second piece of the thrust washer is disposed within the first piece. The outer circumferential portion of the second piece extends into the circumferential recess of the first piece. A predetermined small clearance is provided between the first piece and the second piece which allows a limited amount of relative movement therebetween.

Two-piece thrust washer for universal joint

An improved device for quickly and reliably retaining a pair of bearing cups on a universal joint cross during purging and shipment thereof is disclosed. The retainer includes a central portion which is generally elongated and flat in shape. In a first embodiment, first angled portions are formed integrally with each end of the central portion extending outwardly therefrom. The first angled portions may be oriented at relatively small angles with respect to the central portion. Second angled portions are formed integrally with each end of the first angled portions extending outwardly therefrom. The second angled portions may be oriented at relatively large angles with respect to the first angle portions. The corners between the first and second angled portions are adapted to receive the outer edges of the bearing cups therein. Respective apertures are formed through the retainer at each of such corners to receive locating tangs formed on a mating yoke for the cross. The retainer is frictionally retained on the opposed bearing cups by the inherent resiliency of the retainer, or may alternatively be secured thereto by welding or adhesive. In a second embodiment, the retainer includes a central portion having right angle end portions formed integrally therewith. The retainer of the second embodiment is secured to the respective bearing cups by welding or adhesive.
