A system includes optical modules. Each module includes a different base and one or more module waveguides on the base. Module waveguides from different modules are aligned such that the aligned module waveguides exchange light signals. At least a portion of one of the aligned module waveguides is between the base of one of the modules and the base of another module. First electronics operate a transmitter on a first one of the optical modules so as to generate one of the light signals. Second electronics operate a receiver on a second one of the modules such that the electronics generate an electrical signal in response to the receiver receiving one of the light signals.

Edge coupling of optical devices

An optical device has a waveguide immobilized on a base. A lens is defined by the base. A reflecting side reflects a light signal that travels on an optical pathway that extends through the lens and into the waveguide. The reflecting side is positioned to reflect the light signal as the light signal travels along a portion of the optical pathway between the lens and the waveguide. An optical insulator that confines the light signal within the waveguide. The portion of the optical pathway between the lens and the waveguide extends through the optical insulator such that the light signal is transmitted through the optical insulator.

Transfer of light signals between optical devices

An optical system includes optical devices that each have a top side and a bottom side between lateral sides. A first one of the devices has one or more first waveguides immobilized on a first base. The first device having a first via that defines an optical path that extends from the top side of the first device to the bottom side of the first device. A second one of the devices has a second waveguide immobilized on a second base. An optical fiber has a fiber facet immobilized relative to the first device and aligned with the first via. The first device is between the fiber facet and the second device. The first device, the second device and the optical fiber are arranged such that a light signal exchanged between the optical fiber and the second waveguide travels through the first via.

Transfer of light signals between optical fibers and system using optical devices with optical vias

An optical device includes a waveguide immobilized on a base. The device includes a port configured to receive light signals from the waveguide such that the light signals travel through the port. The light signals enter the port traveling in a first direction. The port is configured to change the direction of the light signals from the first direction to a second direction that is toward a location above the device or below the device. The device also includes a wedge configured to receive the light signals from the port such that the light signals travel through the wedge and then exit the wedge traveling in a direction that is at an angle in a range of 88&#xb0; to 92&#xb0; relative to the device and that is toward a location above or below the device.

Efficient transfer of light signals between optical devices

A receiver includes a waveguide defined in a layer of silicon positioned on a base. The waveguide is immobilized relative to the base along the length of the waveguide. The waveguide is unbranched and is a multi-mode waveguide. The receiver also includes a groove configured to receive an optical fiber. The groove is positioned such that when the optical fiber is positioned in the groove the waveguide receives a light signal that exits a facet of the optical fiber. The receiver also includes a light sensor configured to receive the light signal from the waveguide after the light signal is received by the waveguide, is guided through the waveguide, and exits the waveguide. The receiver also includes a tunable optical attenuator configured to attenuate the light signal as the light signal travels along the waveguide. The receiver can be formed on a chip such that the waveguide is the only optical waveguide on the chip.
