The new unsymmetric allyl-(alkyl) telluride compound methyl allyl telluride and other unsymmetric allyl-(alkyl) telluride compounds are prepared by adding an alkyl Grignard to a tellurium/tetrahydrofuran slurry, then subsequent reaction with an alkyl halide. The unsymmetric allyl-(alkyl) telluride product is isolated by filtration followed by vacuum distillation.

Synthesis of unsymmetric allyl-(alkyl) tellurides

The new compound diallyl telluride and other diorgano telluride compounds are prepared from alkali metal tellurides obtained by an efficient reaction between an alkali metal and tellurium in a naphthalene/tetrahydrofuran solution. The alkali metal telluride then reacts with an organo halide to form the final product which is easily isolated by filtration followed by vacuum distillation.

Dineopentylcadmium is prepared from cadmium dihalide and neopentyl Grignard in tetrahydrofuran. The reaction product is isolated by addition of dioxane, filtration, removal of solvent via distillation, and purification by sublimation.

Preparation of dineopentylcadmium

Finely divided metal sulfide powders of uniform size are produced at low temperatures by a method of adding solutions of organometallic compounds to an organic solvent saturated with H.sub.2 S. The solvent is kept saturated with H.sub.2 S by adding H.sub.2 S at a rate greater than that for the organometallic compound.
