A surgical retractor including a retractor body, and a retractor arm, a control assembly configured to control movement of the retractor blade, the control assembly including a base member having an opening, a regulating member configured to control rotation of a first portion of the retractor arm and move through the opening of the base member, a connecting member cooperatively connected to the regulating member, and a barrel assembly in operative slidable engagement with the opening formed in the base member, wherein rotation of the regulating member in a selected direction moves a stem of the regulating member through the opening thereby forcing the barrel assembly to slide along the opening and the base member to pivot relative to a second portion of the retractor arm between a first position and second position.

A retractor blade assembly includes an arm member, blade connector and a retractor blade having stem member provided at the top of the blade. The stem member includes a first pin member, provided at an upper portion of the stem member. The first pin member has at least one abutment extending outward from the stem member, a first groove provided below the first pin member, a second groove provided below the first groove, provided about the circumference of the stem member, a second pin member having at least one abutment extending from the second groove. The blade connector cooperatively engages the stem member permitting the retractor blade to operate in a rotatable mode and a locked mode.

Retractor blade assembly

A surgical retractor includes a retractor body and a retractor arm. The retractor arm includes a first portion configured to operatively connect to the retractor body, and a control assembly configured to control movement of a retractor blade. The control assembly includes a base member having a first opening and a second opening, and movable between a first position and second position. The retractor arm further includes a regulating member to control rotation of the base member and move through the first opening of the base member, a connecting member cooperatively connected to the regulating member, and a barrel member in operative slidable engagement with the second opening formed in the base member. Rotation of the regulating member in a selected direction moves a stem of the regulating member through the first opening thereby forcing the barrel member to slide along the second opening and the base member to pivot relative to the retractor arm between a first position and second position, thereby rotating a connected retractor blade.

Various exemplary embodiments relate to a method of performing an anterior approach hip replacement. The method may include: exposing a surgical site including the femoral neck and acetabulum using a plurality of retractors secured to the plurality of accessory arms; cutting the femoral neck to remove the femoral head; preparing the acetabulum for insertion of an acetabular cup; preparing the femur for insertion of a femoral implant by lifting the femur using a femur hook and the femur distractor; and closing the surgical site. In various alternative embodiments, the method may include using a lesser trochanteric retractor coming from a direct medial approach and a greater trochanteric retractor coming from a lateral, posterior, proximal approach.

Various exemplary embodiments relate to a distractor system including one or more of the following: a distraction screw comprising a double threaded distal portion and a nonthreaded locking feature near a proximal end of the distraction screw; a crossbar; a first arm coupled to the crossbar; a second arm coupled to the crossbar and having an interior bore sized to receive at least a portion of the distraction screw; and a lock having a nonthreaded aperture sized to receive at least a portion of the distraction screw therethrough, wherein the lock is configurable in a first position and a second position, when configured in the first position the lock engages the locking feature to substantially inhibit axial movement of the distraction screw within the interior bore, and when configured in the second position the lock substantially permits axial movement of the distraction screw within the interior bore.

A retractor assembly has a first clamp adapted to be mounted to a table, a first vertically oriented post supported by the clamp, a first main arm mounted for at least one of angular and lateral movement relative to the first post, and lockable in a selected position, and a tree assembly configured at one end of the second post. The tree assembly has at least two accessory arms, with each accessory arm having a first ball joint on a first end, and a pivot lock knob at an immediate portion, and each accessory arm having a second end configured to accept the mounting of a retractor to the accessory arm. The retractor assembly may also include a J-shaped hook mounted to a ratcheting linearly movable distractor assembly and trochanteric retractors mounted to the accessory arms for femoral elevation and exposure.

Anterior hip replacement retractor assembly

Various embodiments of the present invention provide a surgical retractor having two blade-supporting arms, which are mounted to be laterally slideable towards and apart from each other by a toothed rack. Each arm supports a respective retractor blade. In some embodiments, the retractor blades are curved in the same direction as each other so that the first blade is concave in the first direction, and a second blade is also concave in the same direction. Alternatively or additionally, in some embodiments, a cushioned material or cushioned sleeve is present on the blades where the blades contact the anatomy. The cushioned material or sleeve may be made of a soft silicone. Further, the cushioned material or sleeve may be coated or molded onto the blade structure, or may be a removable sleeve that is manually slid onto or off of the blade structure. Also, alternatively or in addition in some embodiments, blade-mounted lighting may be provided.

An anterior cervical column support having a hollow frame having a top load bearing surface and a bottom load bearing surface may be inserted between a first spinal vertebra and a second spinal vertebra. The top load bearing surface and the bottom load bearing surface may each include an opening allowing access to the interior of the frame. A front surface may extend between the top load bearing surface and the bottom load bearing surface, and a rear surface may extend between the top load bearing surface and the bottom load bearing surface. Two side surfaces are attached between the front surface and the rear surface, each side surface having a solid side panel that is at least x-ray translucent. An anterior (front) plate is attached to the front surface of the support device, where the front plate includes clearance holes for receiving fasteners for holding the front plate in position. The top load bearing surface and the bottom load bearing surface may include a serrated or other high friction surface for applying frictional forces between the load bearing surfaces and adjacent vertebrae.

A connector for connecting a fiber optic cable to a light source comprising a female adaptor having a receiving bore and a channel projecting into the receiving bore; a male ferrule, having a first portion insertable into at least part of the receiving bore, and a second portion defined at least partially by a tapered diameter region; and a compressible ring member disposed in the channel that engages the tapered portion when the male ferrule is inserted in the female adaptor in order to provide some resistance to removal of the male ferrule from the female adaptor.

Various exemplary embodiments relate to a method of performing an anterior approach hip replacement using a retractor assembly. The method may include: providing a retractor assembly including a first vertical post, a plurality of accessory arms mounted to the first post, a second vertical post, and a femur distractor mounted to the second post; exposing a surgical site including the femoral neck and acetabulum using a plurality of retractors secured to the accessory arms; cutting the femoral neck to remove the femoral head; preparing the acetabulum for insertion of an acetabular cup; preparing the femur for insertion of a femoral implant by lifting the femur using a femur hook and the femur distractor; and closing the surgical site. A connector for a surgical retractor is shown. The connector includes a body member having an opening for receiving a nipple of a retractor blade. The connector also includes a retainer pivotally attached to the body member between an open position and a closed position. A lock mechanism locks the retainer in the closed position so that the nipple of the retractor blade is locked in the connector. A safety latch constrains the lock mechanism when the retainer is in the closed position.

The connector also includes a retainer pivotally attached to the body member between an open position and a closed position. A surgical retractor includes a retractor body and a retractor arm. The retractor arm includes a first portion and a second portion. The first portion is attached to the retractor body and the second portion is rotatably attached to the first portion. The second portion is configured to retain a retractor blade and to rotate about an axis parallel to a line drawn along a length of the retractor arm.

A system for use during a medical or surgical procedure on a body. The system generates an image representing the position of one or more body elements during the procedure using scans generated by a scanner prior or during the procedure. The image data set has reference points for each of the body elements, the reference points of a particular body element having a fixed spatial relation to the particular body element. The system includes an apparatus for identifying, during the procedure, the relative position of each of the reference points of each of the body elements to be displayed. The system also includes a processor for modifying the image data set according to the identified relative position of each of the reference points during the procedure, as identified by the identifying apparatus, said processor generating a displaced image data set representing the position of the body elements during the procedure. The system also includes a display utilizing the displaced image data set generated by the processor, illustrating the relative position of the body elements during the procedure. Methods relating to the system are also disclosed. Also disclosed are devices for use with a surgical navigation system having a sensor array which is in communication with the device to identify its position. The device may be a reference frame for attachment of a body part of the patient, such as a cranial reference arc frame for attachment to the head or a spine reference arc frame for attachment to the spine. The device may also be a localization frame for positioning an instrument relative to a body part, such as a localization biopsy guide frame for positioning a biopsy needle, a localization drill guide assembly for positioning a drill bit, a localization drill yoke assembly for positioning a drill, or a ventriculostomy probe for positioning a catheter.
