A system and method for collecting, processing, storing, or transmitting traffic data. A localized data collection module may retrieve, receive, or intercept traffic data through or from hardware installed in a traffic control cabinet adjacent an intersection or other roadway feature of interest. Data which may have previously been confined to a closed loop traffic control system may be remotely accessible for traffic operations control or monitoring via a network connected server and/or cloud architecture.

Localized traffic data collection

A traffic monitoring system () includes a network of geographically distributed sensors (-). The sensors (-) provide raw or preprocessed data to a processing system () based on received long range wireless signals (e.g., 2.4 GHz, 5.8 GHz, or 5.9 GHz spectrum). The processing system () can then implement any of various algorithms to calculate traffic parameters taking into account the range of communication between the source and the sensor. The inputs to these algorithms include a first contacts, last contacts, maximum range, minimum range, median of contacts, average of contacts, maximum strength, and combinations thereof.

Traffic analysis system using wireless networking devices

A system and method for securing and verifying transmitted traffic data. A transmitter may send a transmission via a radio signal including traffic data through or from hardware installed in a traffic control cabinet adjacent an intersection or other roadway feature of interest. The transmission may be signed with a private key. A receiver associated with a vehicle may receive, in addition to the transmission, a public key (e.g., via a data network) for use in verification of the authenticity of the transmission.

Infrastructure to vehicle communication protocol

A system and method for processing traffic data and locally generated data. A traffic signal monitoring device may be associated with a vehicle and configured to receive traffic data from traffic infrastructure devices. The traffic signal monitoring device may additionally or alternatively utilize local data (e.g., speed of the vehicle) to generate alerts to notify a driver of hazardous conditions or to suppress operations (e.g., notifications, menus) of a device to reduce distractions.
